> New York Yankees 4, Detroit Tigers 2 - final

Tarik Skubal was a bit off his usual excellence, but he did well enough.  The blame for the Tigers' loss goes more to the Tigers' hitters and their lack of scoring.

Paul Goldschidt hit a home run leading off the top of the first.

In the bottom of the second inning, Spencer Torkelson doubled, Hao-Yu Lee walked, and Zach McKinstry singled to drive in Mr. Torkelson.

Mr. Goldschmidt homered again in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Spencer Torkelson walked, went to third on a combination of a single by Hao-Yu Lee and a fielding error by Jasson Doninguez, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Malgeri.

In the top of the sixth, Ben Rice singled, and Jasson Dominguez homered.

The Yankees won two of three games in Detroit.  These same two teams will meet up next week in New York City.  Before that, however, the Tigers host the Astros for a four-game series.

Paul Goldschmidt is what I hoped Tork would turn into (or some approximation thereof) when the Tigers drafted him.  Oh well.  Goldschmidt even at age 38 is probably better than Tork will ever be.

Funny thing is that Goldschmidt was originally an 8th-round pick and Tork was a 1st overall pick.

Tork not developing into one of the top power hitting 1B continues to be a big disappointment.   I still think he might have some good seasons in him, but he might need to go to a different team.
I think the Tigers should shop Tork around either at the deadline or in the offseason.

Peter
