Last year the Tigers signed Cuban outfielder Samuell Sanchez.  He was 19, but they assigned him to the DSL where top prospects are only 17.  Happily he did very well, posting a .950 OPS, with a high OBP.

I was surprised that this year they sent him back to the DSL.  Now he’s 20, and closer to 21. You’d really like to see him in A-ball or at least domestic rookie ball.  Not surprisingly, he’s stomping the opposition in the early-going, with 1.092 OPS.  I hope they can get him over here mid-year.  It’s such an odd assignment that I fear there is a visa issue.

Speaking of Cuban outfielders, looks like OF Roberto Campos, who was signed by Al Avila to a $3 million dollar bonus when he was 16, just isn't going to develop into much of a prospect.  He's been in the system since 2021 and is 23 now.  He's played for West Michigan this year (he's currently on the IL) after being demoted from Erie.  Campos was considered a "5-Tool" prospect when the Tigers signed him, but he's never developed into much of a hitter (not much power despite being similar physically to Riley Greene).  He doesn't strike out excessively and has a decent walk rate, but has always had trouble hitting the ball in the air.

I suppose Campos could still be a late bloomer and become a back-up outfielder in the majors in the future, but it's not looking promising for him.
He'll probably leave the Tigers' system as a minor league free agent after this year.

I hope he saved his bonus.  $3 million for a Cuban is like being a billionaire.
