After playing four 4-4 ties in Grapefruit League play this spring, plus a fifth 4-4 tie in a WBC road tune-up against Team Dominican Republic, the Tigers played to a 1-1 tie this afternoon in Lakeland against Baltimore. Max Clark scored in the bottom of the eighth inning in what I scored as a passed ball, after he had taken third base on a wild pitch.

Verlander looked pretty good today against a lineup of mostly Orioles' major leaguers, allowing 1 run, 3 hits, 6 Ks and 0 walks in 4.2 IP.  He gave up his usual homer, but it was only a solo shot.

Keider Montero was pretty bad for Venezuela in his start last night vs. Italy so they yanked him early, or maybe they just planned to do a bullpen game all along.
Montero was all over the place with his pitches, walking 3 and allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in 1.1 IP.  Montero was throwing his fastball 98-mph but had very poor command out of the gate.  He seemed to be too amped up and was overthrowing.

Ex-Tiger Michael Lorenzen took the loss in relief for Italy.  Lorenzen was originally scheduled to start, but Italy started Aaron Nola instead.  Nola pitched well for 4 innings and Lorenzen pitched well for 2 innings, but got knocked around for 3 runs in the 7th as Venezuela ended up winning 4-2.

Gleyber Torres had 2 singles and a walk for VZ, and one-time Tiger prospect Gino Suarez hit a solo shot against Nola.

Venezuela vs. the US in the WBC final is just getting underway.  That's 2 strong teams.
Ex-Tiger E-Rod is starting for VZ and Nolan McLean for the US.   Could be a good game.

Great WBC final tonight.  Nice to see Miggy in the dugout.
E-Rod actually pitched very well.

Ha ha.  That’s funny as actually I’ve been under the weather and had to shut things down after the 7th inning last night.  So I did indeed miss all the excitement :-)

It was an exciting game.  Bryce's Harper's game-tying homer was thrilling.  (Not a Harper fan, but the US team was so psyched up after he hit that homer, I did feel bad for them after they ended up losing).   I was rooting for VZ.  Happy for them and their fans.  Their country has been through some seriously bad times so they deserve something to feel good about.  It was fun to see some current Tigers and ex-Tigers playing for them (plus Miggy cheering them on from the dugout).

Ok, the WBC is done.  Let's bring on the regular MLB season.  The exhibition season drags on and on and on...
