I have just been checking in on gameday occasionally as I’m out tonight… But for those actually watching the game, how was Skubal?

He is gone after 5 2/3 innings. He only gave up 3 runs so certainly not an embarrassing performance, but also not exactly dominating based on the box score (White Sox lead 3-2 in the 6th),

All the trade scenario articles seem to be premised on the idea Skubal returns to form. But what if he’s just good… But not that great? It makes Scott Harris’ job harder.

Skubal hasn't been bad, but his command still isn't sharp so he makes some mistakes.  I think he's still getting the rust off.

The current strategy against Skubal is to swing early in the count when he is trying to get ahead and often throws pitches too over the plate. It seems to be working.

Skubal is still getting the K’s as he struck out 9 Yankees tonight but unfortunately, gave up 4 runs in 6 innings.

Tigers are down 4-2 in the 7th.

As I mentioned in the initial email below last week, what if Skubal continues to be just good through July, but not elite?  It’s the worst of both worlds for the Tigers: he doesn’t pitch well enough to get them back in the race and he doesn’t command as much on the trade market because teams can argue he hasn’t truly returned to form.

As a Tiger fan, I don’t want to see Skubal traded because it means the team has thrown the white flag on the season, which is no fun… But if they have to deal him, how much confidence do we have in Harris? Thinking back to 2023 when he kind of had an easy layup on E-Rod at the trade deadline and couldn’t even get that done.

He gave up two solo homers to Paul Goldschmidt and a two-run homer to Jasson Dominguez for New York's four runs. According to Jason Beck, that's the first time he's allowed three homers in a game since 2021.

Goldschmidt's first homer was on a fastball that was in the high and inside part of the strike zone. His second was on a low curve at the bottom of the strike zone. Dominguez's homer was on a change that ended up down the middle.

Skubal’s command isn’t there yet.

Skubal not sharp but scoring 2 runs scored isn’t going to cut it.  Geez, our offense is so frustrating.

Especially frustrating since we have double the amount of base runners than the Yankees.
Tigers trail 4-2 in bottom of 9th.

Tigers lose 4-2.  We can't even blame having Jones in the lineup because he wasn't in the lineup.  Malgeri did his best Jones imitation, going 0-3 with 3 Ks to come back to earth.
Disappointing home series.
Skubal wasn't his best but he had lousy run support, just like Mize yesterday.  This offense just isn't good enough to put together a big winning streak, which we probably will need to have any chance to get back into the race.
Guardians beat the White Sox today so the Tigers stay 7.5 back.
