> Los Angeles Angels 5, Detroit Tigers 4 - final

Tarik Skubal only had one bad inning, but that was enough to let the Dodgers win this game.

The Dodgers took the early lead when Tommy Edman homered in the bottom of the second.  That came a half-inning after Spencer Torkelson was out for going too far from third base too quickly.

The Tigers tied the game in the top of the fourth, when Spencer Torkelson walked, went to second on a single, went to third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch by Blake Snell.

The Tigers took the lead in the top of the fifth, when Gleyber Torres singled, went to third on a single by Riley Green (who advanced to second base on the throw to third), and scored on a sacrifice fly by Manuel Margot.

In the bottom of the fifth, Andy Pages singled, Shohei Ohtani was safe on a force out of Mr. Pages, Mookie Betts walked, and Teoscar Hernandez homered to drive in Mr. Ohtani and Mr. Betts.  That gave the Dodgers a 4-2 lead.

Spencer Torkelson hit a solo home run with one out in the top of the seventh inning.

Shohei Ohtani homered in the bottom of the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, Zach McKinstry tripled, and Kerry Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mr. McKinstry.

The Tigers lost the opener.  Jack Flaherty, whom the Tigers traded to the Dodgers last July, will start for the Tigers against the Dodgers tonight.  26-year-old righthander Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start for the Dodgers.

> Detroit Tigers AB R H RBI HR BB K AVG OBP SLG
> A. Ibanez 3B 5 0 0 0 0 0 1 .000 .000 .000

Ibanez hit the ball hard 4 times with nothing to show for it.  Just bad luck.

> G. Torres 2B 5 1 2 0 0 0 0 .400 .400 .400

After he stole 2nd in the 9th he immediately tried to steal 3rd on the next pitch but Tork fouled off the pitch.  I think Torres would have stolen 3rd because he got a great jump and surprised the Dodgers. Too bad.

> R. Greene LF-CF 5 0 1 0 0 0 3 .200 .200 .200

Greene can be frustrating to watch because his big uppercut swing can lead to a lot of strikeouts or choppers, but he often makes it work.  Just not last night.
Made a couple of nice catches in LF.  He's smooth in LF.

> S. Torkelson DH 1 2 1 1 1 4 0 1.000 1.000 4.000

The Dodgers seemed very careful pitching to Tork and he didn't try to force things and just accepted the walks.  When he got a pitch to drive in his 5th at-bat he hit it for a homer.
This looked like the Tork who was the best hitter in college baseball when he got drafted.  It was just one game, but Tork did look like a different hitter.  Let's hope it continues.

I just picked up Tork for my fantasy team, so I've probably cursed him.

> M. Margot RF 3 0 2 1 0 0 1 .667 .500 .667

Scrappy hitter.

>    T. Sweeney PH 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 .000 .000 .000

Just missed ripping a 2-run double down the RF line in the 9th.

> C. Keith 1B 5 0 0 0 0 0 1 .000 .000 .000

Did not look good.  Was making very weak contact.

> J. Baez SS 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 .000 .000 .000

Had some wild swings as usual but moved runners over instead of striking out.

>    Z. McKinstry PH-SS 1 1 1 0 0 1 0 1.000 1.000 3.000

Good job off the bench.

> J. Rogers C 3 0 1 0 0 1 1 .333 .500 .333

I thought he hit a 3-run homer to LF in the 2nd off the bat, but it just died near the fence and Pages caught it.

> R. Kreidler CF 2 0 1 0 0 0 1 .500 .500 .500

Made a great catch in CF and singled.  We'll take anything we can get from him.

>    K. Carpenter PH-LF 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 .000 .000 .000

Had a chance to drive in a run or two as a pinch hitter but popped out.  At least he hit a sac fly in his next AB.

> Los Angeles Dodgers AB R H RBI HR BB K AVG OBP SLG
> S. Ohtani DH 4 2 2 1 1 0 0 .417 .500 1.000

I thought we had contained Ohtani until he homered in the 8th.  He's such a great hitter.

> HR: T. Hernández (1, 5th inning off Skubal 2 on, 2 Out);
>    Ohtani (2, 7th inning off Hanifee 0 on, 2 Out);
>    Edman (2, 2nd inning off Skubal 0 on, 1 Out)

There's your difference.  The Dodgers hit homers on 3 mistake pitches, but the Tigers only did it once.  The Tigers got their share of mistake pitches but didn't do much with them except for Tork's solo homer.

> Detroit Tigers IP H R ER BB K HR PC-ST ERA
> T. Skubal (L, 0-1) 5.0 6 4 4 1 2 2 80-55 7.20

Skubal wasn't missing many bats.  He seemed to be trying his slider a lot and it wasn't working too well.
The Dodgers' game plan was to swing early in the count against him and they made it work.
Skubal probably should have adjusted and started throwing more offspeed stuff or pitches away or inside on the first pitch.  The 3-run homer he gave up to Hernandez was a first-pitch fastball down the middle.  Hernandez went up there looking to hack at the first pitch and got what he wanted.

Kudos to the Dodgers for making their gameplan work.

> J. Brebbia 1.0 0 0 0 0 2 0 10-7 0.00
> B. Hanifee 1.0 1 1 1 0 1 1 20-13 9.00

Welcome to the Ohtani experience.  Hanifee threw a 3-2 sinker in the zone to Ohtani, but maybe they should have just walked him.

> B. Brieske 1.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 12-8 0.00

Beau looked pretty good last night.

> Los Angeles Dodgers IP H R ER BB K HR PC-ST ERA
> B. Snell (W, 1-0) 5.0 5 2 2 4 2 0 92-53 3.60

The Tigers had quite a bit of traffic on the bases against Snell and they made him throw a lot of pitches, but he was still tough when he had to be.

> T. Scott (H, 1) 1.0 1 1 1 0 1 0 14-11 4.50

Scott was signed to be their closer, but Roberts brought him in for the 8th instead.   He wanted the lefty Scott to face Carpenter.

> B. Treinen (S, 1) 1.0 1 0 0 1 2 0 23-13 0.00

Treinen is normally a setup guy, but got the save.  He's got good stuff and would probably could be a closer for a lot of teams.  The Dodgers have a deep bullpen.

Greene can be frustrating to watch because his big uppercut swing can lead to a lot of strikeouts or choppers, but he often makes it work.  Just not last night.

The ESPN crew said Greene has the most extreme uppercut swing in the majors, based on the bat path tracking MLB can do now. It was interesting to hear that, because I think a lot of us think he would have even more success if he did not have such an extreme uppercut.
