Here are good starting pitching (I've included a couple of bullpen games where a long reliever pitched well) performances by the Tigers in games they've lost this month:
5/4 vs. Boston: Holton (opener)/Madden: 6 IP, 0 runs
5/6 vs. KC: Montero: 6 IP, 1 run
5/9 vs. KC: Madden: 6 IP, 3 runs (Pitched the last 6 innings of the game after Smith/Holton opened).
5/13 vs. NYM: Valdez: 6.2 IP, 2 runs
5/16 vs. Tor: Mize: 6 IP, 0 runs
5/19 vs. Cle: Montero: 5 IP, 3 runs
5/20 vs. Cle: Anderson: 4.2 IP, 0 runs
5/21 vs. Cle: Mize, 6.2 IP, 2 runs
5/24 vs. Bal: Valdez, 6 IP, 1 run
So that's 12 runs allowed in 9 appearances and the Tigers have lost all 9 of those games.
And with better defense behind them, they probably would have allowed even fewer runs. I know in at least 2 of those outings a bov e the Tigers' bad defense contributed to runs.
