This afternoon's lineup vs. righty Chris Martin (3.31 ERA in 14 starts with 83 Ks in 81.2 IP).
Martin has a 5.26 ERA in his last 7 starts.

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) SS
  2. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  3. Kerry Carpenter (L) RF
  4. Riley Greene (L) DH
  5. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  6. Colt Keith (L) 3B
  7. James Outman (L) CF
  8. Trei Cruz (S) LF

A lefty-heavy lineup against the righty Martin. Get ready for a Jahmai Jones appearance later in the game.
Where has Riley Greene's power bat gone?  He only has 8 homers in 318 plate appearances.  Greene is also only hitting .211 in the past month.

Keider Montero returns to the rotation after 1 relief appearance thanks to Verlander's latest injury.
Montero's WHIP is right up there with Skubal and Mize.  He doesn't miss bats like those guys but he limits base traffic with lots of weaker contact and he doesn't walk many hitters.   The Tigers' pitchers have kept the White Sox sluggers in check in this series, let's hope Montero does the same.

Tigers are 10-6 (.625) in June which is the winning percentage they'll need to maintain the rest of the season to get back into contention.
If they go .625 the rest of the season they'll win 85 games.  Keep hope alive!

Jones pinch hit for McKinstry in the bottom of the 7th after Lee doubled with 1 out.  Jones struck out.  Sigh.
Tigers trail 3-2 going into the bottom of the 9th.  Jones is due up in the 9th.  Sigh.

Jones, McG, and Dingler with consecutive two out singles to tie the game. Carpenter grounded out on a 2-0 pitch with the winning run on third. 3-3 in the 10th.

Of course I’d like to see more offense, but overall a really good series for the Tigers. Now let’s win an extra inning game for a change!

Jones's single was an infield single.  Carp hit the ball hard but the 1B Gonzalez made a nice play.

Vest is coming in for the top of the 10th with the ghost runner on 2nd.

Jones barely beat it out or the game would’ve been over.

Vierling wins it with a bases loaded bloop single in the 10th. Sweep!

This home stand I think is really key to the whole season. It’s 10 games in all so they still have 7 games left between the Yankees and Houston.

The sweep of the Sox is in the books.  Would obviously be great if they could turn it into a real winning streak.  Though they are still 11 games under .500 so even sweeping the next 7 and going 10-0 still wouldn’t even quite get them to .500!

But obviously two more decisive series wins would certainly get them on the road to jumping back into some kind of playoff race I would think.  Conversely, if they lose the series to the Yanks and/or Houston, I think they head into July as definite sellers at the trade deadline.

I think they need to go 6-1. Losing the two series to CLE and HOU recently hurt and sweeping CWS helped offset it a little but not enough.

Vierling's walk-off dying quail bloop single to RF was on a 100-mph inside sinker from Jordan Hicks.  It was the kind of lucky cheap hit that other teams like the Twins or Guardians usually get against us.  Nice to get some good batted-ball luck for a change.

Good work from the bullpen again today.  Drew "Beer League" Sommers struck out the side in the 8th and Finnegan didn't allow any baserunners in the 9th.  Vest allowed the ghost runner in the 10th to score on 2 flyballs but didn't allow any runners otherwise.

Tigers really need 2 or 3 more sweeps this month to make up for the Cleveland and Houston series.
Sweeping the Yankees will not be easy.  We face Gerrit Cole tomorrow and then 2 lefties: Rodon and Weathers. So we'll be seeing a lot of Jahmai Jones.
