Toledo manager Gabe "E-5" Alvarez was fired yesterday for "violating a team policy" according to the Tigers.   Gabe used to commit a lot of errors for the Tigers and now it seems he committed an error as manager.

Mike Hessman has been named interim manager.

Max Clark is in a 6/47 (.128) slump with Toledo.

The Florida Complex League is starting this week.

Some players to watch on the FCL Tigers:
OF Cris Rodriguez
RHP Owen Hall
SS Angel De Los Santos

Some Tigers fans social media speculation on Alvarez's firing... ;)
  • Advocated for signing Zack Short
  • Having a CF who can't catch or hit is a violation of team policy
  • Alvarez was seen at a resort with Diana Russini

Anyone from the Randy Smith era should be fired.  Just kidding.
Alvarez was supposedly considered an up-and-coming managerial prospect.  I wonder what he did that messed things up for him?

I would imagine Alvarez did something in the sexually inappropriate category.  Given all the front office staff who were let go last year for that type of behaviour (and also Craig Monroe!) I am guessing it's zero tolerance in the Tigers organization at this point.

A CF who can’t catch or CAN hit, maybe.

There's another article in the Athletic from March 2026 about the Tigers firing a whistleblower - for being a whistleblower.

They really are trying to take all of the fun out of being a supporter of the organization.  What a dumpster fire.

Seems like the toxicity of the Tigers' organization still hadn't been cleaned out despite the revelations of the past few years.

I blame Randy Smith for trading away Travis Fryman for E-5 Alvarez to begin with.  ;-)

As I said in a post below, the Tigers have zero tolerance now because of all the guys they had to clear out last year.  And some of those reports were no-brainers. Yeah, you need to fire an executive who is sending dick pics to a female staffer. Without hesitation.

But I do wonder about the Alvarez situation. Maybe he did something egregious…Or is it a straight up he said-she said kind of scenario where they won’t even take the time to get the details. There’s an accusation. He’s just gone and that’s it.  Or was it something that was inappropriate but not at the level of an impeachable offence under normal circumstances?

I only say this because it seems to be involving only one employee… and there weren’t all these specifics that came out right away.

Before sending this, I did one more look to see if there was an update and there is. here’s what happened:

The Detroit Tigers fired their Triple-A manager, Gabe Alvarez, after he sent an "inappropriate" text message to a female colleague. Story free at ESPN, with full statement from Alvarez addressing his regret over sending the message that led to his firing:

The Athletic article said the team did an investigation, and fired Alvarez as a result.  I’ve no reason to read any ambiguity into that.  It wasn’t just an allegation.

We don't know if Alvarez has a history of this behavior, or this was just some one-time inappropriate text he sent to the female employee.  Regardless, Alvarez should have known they have a zero tolerance policy for this stuff and can't complain about the consequences.

I think zero tolerance policies can be a bit harsh because each case is different, but I totally get why the Tigers have a zero tolerance policy due to their recent track record.

I'm starting to wonder why Scott Harris doesn't take more heat for this this stuff, or were the worst offenders under the Avila regime?

Harris hasn't caught heat for this because most of the previous offenders weren't on the baseball side of the organization. Some worked at Comerica Park, but they did things like in-game video production, like the between-innings stuff they show on the scoreboard. One was the business operations manager in Lakeland. The others were Craig Monroe and Cameron Maybin, who were employed by Bally Sports or whatever its parent company is called. The assistant GM who quit last year had been with the team for 13 years. He rose through the ranks under Dombrowski. Harris kept him on when he was hired.

Got it.  The Sam Menzin case is a bit concerning for Harris, though.   That guy was a known sleazebag for a long time.
