Tonight's lineup vs. righty Gerritt Cole (2.57 ERA in 5 starts.  He's had 4 quality starts in the 5 starts since coming off the IL):

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) 3B
  2. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  3. Kerry Carpenter (L) RF
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  6. Colt Keith (L) DH
  7. James Outman (L) CF
  8. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B
  9. Zach McKinstry (L) SS

Framber Valdez (4.09 ERA in 15 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.  Who knows what we'll get?

I believe the Tiger rotation has 24 or 25 straight starts without giving up more than 4 runs in a game. It’s the longest streak in the majors.

There were also a couple of other numbers that reflect how the Tigers have had a good month of June.  As Peter noted, it’s a good time to be facing the Yankees with their injuries and I am comfortable throwing Valdez, Mize & Skubal at them.

Tigers with a rare 3-run outburst in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 3-1 lead on Cole.  McKinstry led off with a triple and scored on a McGonigle ground out.  McKinstry hitting better lately.
After Carp singled and Greene walked with 2 outs, Tork hit a 2-out RBI single to CF to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead, and then Keith followed with an RBI single to CF, which was a 104-mph bullet.   Outman struck out to leave Tork and Keith stranded.  Tork's been hitting pretty well lately.  Long may it last.

Tigers win 5-3. Vest with a four out save.

Of note, Yankee lefty Ryan Yarborough pitched two innings of relief. Carpenter was hit for but Keith was not (both PH Vierling and Keith made outs).

Tigers get a bonus win against Cole, winning 5-3.  Quality start from Valdez, allowing 1 run in 6 innings and 8 Ks
Valdez has pitched mostly ok this season (he usually keeps us in the game), it's just that he's had a couple of big meltdowns, including embarrasingly losing his cool against the Red Sox.

It got a little scary as Anderson allowed a 2-run shot to Rosario (another annoying ex-Cleveland player) in the 7th on a change-up.
Anderson has pitched pretty well but has been vulnerable to homers.

Good news is that the Yankees' lineup is a little less scary without Judge.

Nice to see some power from Greene with a 422-foot bomb deep into the RF stands and 2 hits from Tork.  We need both of them to keep hitting if we're going to get back into this thing.

I assume we'll see Jones and Cruz (ugh!) in the lineup tomorrow vs. Rodon.

Chalk up another good start tonight to keep the streak going.
Guardians losing 3-0 to the White Sox in the 6th.  Tigers could move to 6.5 behind 1st place if the Sox hold the lead.  (Other teams beat Cleveland, it's just us who shrivel up with whatever voodoo curse they put on us).

The White Sox blew a 4-3 lead against the Guardians in the top of the 9th (Dominguez blew the save like he did against the Tigers the other day) but walked it off in the bottom of the 9th against Cade Smith on a 2-out, 2-run single by Sam Antonacci.   The Tigers are now 6.5 behind 1st place.  Keep hope alive!

It’s hard to even contemplate being “back in the race” when you’re still 10 games under .500. But the Tigers do have the best record in June of any AL team so I say just keep it going and see what happens.

White Sox beat the Guardians 2-1 tonight so the Sox move into 1st place, and the Tigers are now 7.5 behind the Sox.
