Will Vest almost got out of the 8th inning today with no damage. He gave up a leadoff single to Yainer Diaz, but struck out Jake Myers and Taylor Trammell and got ahead 1-2 on Christian Vazquez (a weak-hitting catcher), but he threw a fastball low
in the zone that Vazquez grounded into rightfield for a single, moving Diaz to 2B.
Vest then melted down and allowed an RBI single to CF to Jeremy Pena. Outman committed an error on Pena's single so Pena and Vazquez advanced to 2nd and 3rd. Our old buddy Isaac Paredes then hit a 2-run double on a 96-mph fastball near the middle
of the plate. Astros scored 3 runs with 2 outs against Vest to take the 8-6 lead, which was the final score.
Giving up a single to the weak-hitting Vazquez on a 1-2 pitch was killer. Good piece of hitting from Vazquez, but a questionable 1-2 pitch choice by Rogers/Vest.
Vest just doesn't have it this year. He did spend some time on the IL, but he hasn't been good all season. He's a shadow of himself from last year.
Just another in the list of disappointments this season.
