The Tigers have picks at 24, 24, and 62 on Day 1.
I'm not a MLB draft expert at all, but I would guess that Harris and Co might be looking for best HS player available, even early in the draft? The major league team has no big holes. The farm system is deep. We don't need to draft for a particular position and can afford to take a player with upside and give him time to develop.
As Peter and others have said, the minor league SP stable isn't what it was even a year ago, so perhaps if the right college pitcher is there that could be a choice?
My understanding is the draft this year is generally thought to be high floor/low ceiling, which is good in a year where we don't have a high pick for once.
