Marlins have been playing well lately. They have some interesting younger players.
I notice their cleanup hitter tonight is 26-year-old catcher Liam Hicks, who was in the Tigers' organization a couple of years ago, but was taken by the Marlins in the Rule V draft last year.
The Marlins kept him on the roster all season and he hit .247/.346/.346 with 6 homers in 390 plate appearances as their #2 catcher and occasional 1B/DH. He had an 11% walk rate and only a 14% strikeout rate.
Hicks is hitting .314/.390/.600 with 3 homers in 41 PA this season. He's been splitting time between catcher and 1B.
The Tigers acquired Hicks (along with righty reliever Tyler Owens) from the Rangers in the Carson Kelly trade in July 2024.
I remember at the time Hicks was considered a decent hitting catching prospect with good plate discipline, but had some defensive weaknesses.
