I was browsing the internet looking for the words of the immortal "song of the turtle" poem that Ernie Harwell would always read during his pre-game before the broadcast of the first game of a new season and I happened to come across the Ernie Harwell web site. When I visited the site I discovered it was primarily a site set up to sell the Ernie Harwell Audio Scrapbook which I discovered was a 4 hour compilation of interviews with Ernie as well as many of his most famous calls. Included in the 4 CD collection is just about everything from Ernie talking about his earliest days in baseball to his final broadcast of a Tiger game in 2002 and a whole lot more. On the site there are some clips you can listen to for free just to get a sample like Ernie discussing the origins of his "signature calls" ("He stood there by the side of the road", "Two for the price of one", "Long gone" and "A fella from Saginaw caught that foul ball"). You can also he! ar him reading the "song of the turtle" poem which is why I happened on the site in the first place.
Anyway, if you grew up with the voice of Ernie Harwell coming from a small transistor radio next to your pillow at night trying to stay awake long enough to hear the end of the game or even if you didn't the site is well worth a visit. Personally I bought the CD collection. For about $20 I thought it was a steal.

The clips on the site are more of Ernie talking than actual calls except his signature phrases that you mention below.  The track listing appears to be mainly interviews as well.  Are there many of his actual calls on the 4 CD set, Karlun?  As much as I like Ernie, I can't see buying it unless you get some of his great calls over the years.  I don't see any in the track listing.

I purchased it but I haven't received it yet so I can't give a full report. From listening to the sample clips and looking at the track listing I believe that you are correct.  It is mostly Ernie talking, telling his stories, as well as some clips where available that might punctuate those stories. Anyone who ever listened to an Ernie Harwell broadcast knows that his memory is a vault of colorful and interesting stories that tell the history of baseball in America. And that is really what the collection is supposed to be. A verbal history of baseball as told by Ernie Harwell from the time of Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth to the time of Barry Bonds and Bud Selig. Once I do get the chance to listen to the entire collection I will give an official review of it to the group and let you know if I think it was worth the $20, plus shipping and handling of course.

I borrowed this from a friend a couple of months ago, and very quickly found myself caught up in it.  I’m going to buy my own copy.  I thought it was fantastic.

He starts from the beginning of his career and goes through all of it.  It’s a question and answer format with an interviewer, Bob Harris, asking questions and Ernie giving conversational answers.  There are some sound clips from games, including such things as Ernie’s part of the broadcast describing “The Shot Heard Round the World”, Ernie’s “A man from  Brighton caught that one”, and so on, but the famous sound clips aren’t set apart from the rest of the CDs.  The tracks on the CD are indexed so you can figure out where the famous clips are going to be, I suppose.  I didn’t listen to it that way, though.  I started with the first CD and listened all the way through to the end of the 4th CD without skipping anything.

I listened to it entirely in my car in February.  It took me two days; I have a 45 minute drive to work, and found myself going out at lunch time, driving around so I could listen to more of it.  I wished it had been a 10 CD set.

This is all the recommendation I want. I have an old cassette tape
with an inning or two of a Tigers game from 1983 I think, and it's nice to
listen to the flow of just any old game. Still, I'd really enjoy just listening
to Ernie tell tales, so I'll be getting this set myself. Karlun, thanks for
bringing it to our attention.

Purchased a copy at Christmas time.Have listened to only Disc 1 of 4.Roughly
4 hours total of Ernie talking to Bob Harris (broadcasting voice of Duke
Basketball/Football).Ernie does 4-5 minutes on roughly 60 different
subjects/topics covering his career and the times with Detroit included.
