This afternoon's lineup vs. 24-year-old righty Luinder Avila (4.86 ERA in 19 games, 10 starts).  Avila has a 5.87 ERA as a starter so he'll probably shut us out.

  1. Colt Keith (L) 3B
  2. Kevin McGonigle (L) SS
  3. Gleyber Torres (R) DH
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  6. Kerry Carpenter (L) RF
  7. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  8. James Outman (L) CF
  9. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B

Hinch wants to bat Keith at leadoff lately.  Keith has a 5.1% walk rate (MLB average is 8.4).
Lee is batting 9th.  Whatever, AJ.

Lefty Framber Valdez (4.57 ERA in 20 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.  Toss a coin as to what we'll get from him.  I'll blame his last start on him being emotionally/mentally distracted after his grandmother's death, but Valdez has a tendency to have blow-up starts anyway.

At this point, I don't care if the Tigers trade Valdez at the deadline and agree to eat a big chunk of his remaining salary.
One reason Valdez was signed was as a hedge against losing Skubal next year, but Valdez looks more like a #5 starter now than a guy who could take over the #1 spot for Skubal.  He'll be a $42.8 million #5 starter next year.  Woof!

The Royals sent 8 men to the plate in the top of the 1st against Valdez and scored 2 runs, although the 2nd run was unearned thanks to a 2-out error by Lee that allowed the run to score.  Valdez was very lucky he only allowed 2 runs.
Valdez just doesn't have very good stuff anymore.  He has to nibble and can't overpower hitters at all.

Naturally, the Tigers went 1-2-3 vs. Avila in the 1st.  Royals lead 2-0 in the top of the 2nd.

Tigers trail 2-0 in the top of the 4th.  They put 2 runners on in the bottom of the 2nd with walks from Dingler and Tork, but Outman, who is batting 8th, predictably struck out to leave them stranded.  Lee was on deck.  Why is Lee batting 9th?  It really is time to move on from Outman.  Time to activate Baez.

Tigers have 1 hit against Avila, a 2-out-single by McGonigle in the 3rd.

Valdez seems to be settling down after a shaky first inning.

Well, at least the Guardians lost today. 

Valdez has given up another run on a walk and a double in the 4th.  Royals lead 3-0.  Tigers digging themselves a hole.

Tigers get three singles, a walk, and a big error from KC in the 5th and score four. Now 4-3 Tigers in the 6th. Valdez in line to get the win now - lol. Of course, to do that the Tigers pen will have to pitch four shutout innings or the O needs to keep scoring.
