Dingler, McGonigle & Greene have been chosen as reserves on the American League All-Star team.

I’m actually surprised Skubal wasn’t added as well. Obviously he was injured, but he has been such a dominant pitcher the last 2+ years and they sometimes tend to put a few guys in who fans want to see. And of course, his numbers are not that bad but anyway…

Mize would be another choice, but no doubt high competition among pitchers and that rule where there has to be at least one player from every team.

But certainly those are good Tiger choices.

Video of Hinch announcing the All-Stars in the locker room.

Not gonna lie, I expected a much more emotionally energetic video, a la Dan Campbell. If all of Hinch's locker room activity is this soporific then I understand even more why this team plays dead for long stretches every season. 🙂

Oh no, not good for Dingler, McGonigle and Greene.   There was an All-Star curse on the Tigers last year.

Yeah, it was pretty low key just like Hinch's flat-line personality.

McGonigle joins Kaline and The Bird as only the third Tiger ever to make the All-Star team at 21 years of age or younger.

Dingler might start since Shea Langeliers, who won the vote, is skipping the AS game due to an injury.

I saw that Vlad Guerrero, Jr. dropped out due to an "injury".  I think it was more from embarrassment (.693 OPS).
Tork has a higher OPS than Vlad, Jr.  (Vlad, Jr. has 0.8 WAR and Tork has -0.3 WAR because Tork's defense sucks).

If they hadn't missed time to injuries, I think Skubal and Mize would be there.  You could make a case for Montero as well.

Vlad Jr has had some back issues. He missed a couple of games last week and another one the other day. I’m sure he doesn’t think he deserves to be in the All-Star game but it’s also legit that he wants to get some rest for the back.

I wonder if he's been having back issues all season?  He only has 4 homers and 13 doubles all season.  Rough season.

He has yet to hit a home run at home in Toronto. All 4 of his dingers have come on the road.

I love it. You can tell from this video that Hinch loves these guys and they love him. You could see him choking back the tears.

The three all-stars are 9th, 14th, and 18th in the league in OPS, so probably pretty good choices.  Greene is 4th among AL outfielders.

By the way, full marks for ex-Tiger Kody Clemens, now 30 years old.  Clemens is tied for 19th in the AL in OPS at .811, one spot below McGonigle.  It's only a half-season, but I thought he would never hit that well.  His career OPS of .706 is about 10 points higher than I might have predicted - that's the margin of this one good season - but he still has the downslide of his career to reconcile that.

Hinch has given some pretty good locker room speeches when they’ve made the playoffs or won playoff series.

This kind of speech doesn’t require a lot of rah-rah, football halftime theatrics.

Also, there will be injury replacements and, among the starting pitchers, replacements for guys who pitch on the Sunday before the game, maybe the Saturday, too. My guess is Skubal or Mize could be selected that way.

Wouldn't have predicted Clemens would turn out better than Matt Vierling (whom he was traded for as part of Scott Harris's first trade for the Tigers).
