Colt Keith was 2-2, single and a triple, and Hinch hits for him once the Angels bring in a lefty.

Jahmai Jones got an RBI single in the AB, so it worked out in the short term. Still, that spot will come up at least once maybe twice more in the game and it'll likely be against a righty pitcher so just leave Keith in the game at this point.

Tigers lead 5-4 after the 5th, though it should have been more as they made three consecutive outs with the bases loaded in that inning.

Montero still in the game as he's only thrown 78 pitches.

McGonigle is 3-3 and McKinstry has two sac flies.

100% agree that taking Keith out is silly.

Tigers are now up 6-4 in the bottom of the 7th, but a better hitting team would have scored at least 10 runs by now and put the game away.  Not complaining too much, though, because 6 runs from this Tigers' lineup is a massive outburst.  Just hope the bullpen holds it.

Nice catch from Riley Greene earlier tonight in the top of the 7th.

Uh-oh, Angels just cut it to 6-5 with 2 outs in the 8th on a double to RF by O'Hoppe against Vest.  Wenceel Perez didn't play it very well near the wall.

LOL, Grissom just hit a 2-out grand slam against Vest in the 8th.  Angels lead 9-6.
Vest was clearly gassed but Hinch left him in.  After O'Hoppe doubled with 2 outs, Neto got a cheap hit on a deflected ball off Vest to put runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs, Vest then then walked Trout to load the bases, and Grissom hit the grand salami.

There has been abundant poor defense in this game. In this case the misplay by Perez basically lost it for them. Vierling has also been bad in CF. Riley did make a couple of nice catches.

Yep, Perez butchered a catchable ball in the 8th into a double for O'Hoppe with 2 outs. Perez completely negated his earlier homer and then some.
There is no excuse why Hinch keeps playing Perez in RF.  Perez could be the worst all-around everyday player in the majors.

Vierling was awful in CF as well.

Tork and McKinstry striking out with the bases loaded was pretty bad as well.  The Tigers really could have put the game out of sight then.

Tork has 3 Ks tonight.  He's useless.  He's basically a 1-outcome hitter.

Saw a stat this weekend that said Perez has the worst WAR in baseball.

Parker Meadows with his broken arm would be a better fielder than Perez.
Even Kerry Carpenter, who is pretty bad in RF, looks like Al Kaline compared to Perez.

Hinch's over-platooning is getting old.  He's starting to jump the shark.

I used to like Perez.  He was a fun player to root for and came up with some big hits and even some nice plays in the OF during our run in 2024 and in the first half of 2025,  but he's absolutely bottomed out this season.  He really needs to go back to the minors to try saving his career.  It won't happen with Detroit.

Of course there are a lot of injuries, but at some point, management needs to show that they recognize guys aren’t performing. Flaherty should be yanked from the rotation. Perez should be replaced etc.

We all had our critiques of Jim Leyland but there’s no way he would put up with this garbage every night.

It wasn't a super easy play, but a decent rightfielder makes the catch there.
Perez has been getting poor jumps and poor reads on the ball all season.

No, that's just bad.  He slowly drifted to the wall and never got there as a result.  I'm a bad outfielder, but I sprint chaotically once I know where the ball is going.

Perez has been making terrible reads and jumps all season in the outfield.

He's had communication issues with his fellow outfielders when calling for balls in the past.  I seem to remember him getting in Meadows' way sometimes (and Greene's had this issue as well).

But Perez has never been this bad until this year.

Even when things were going well he wasn't good. Didn't Perez catch the payoff-clinching out in the 2024 season and almost injured Meadows in the process?

Tork did just barely miss a grand slam in one of his at-bats last night.  It was close down the line but the umps ruled the ball foul.   He ended up striking out swinging at a 3-2 changeup below the zone in that at-bat.  That's just normal luck for Tork....he just misses or hits the ball to the wrong part of the ballpark when he does make contact, but most of the time he just strikes out or draws the occasional walk.

In Tork's final AB last night in the 9th to end the game, he took an absolute meatball 90-mph fastball down the middle for strike 3.  As Ernie would say, "He stood there like a house by the side of the road".

Tork has got to be the most confused and overthinking hitter in baseball.  I still think if he ends up in another organization he'll hit 40+ homers and be an All-Star, but I don't think it's going to happen with Detroit.  The guy is a mental mess.

Yes, he was always getting in Meadows' way.  Infuriating.

I do remember Perez making some decent plays in 24-25 and he was surprisingly good at throwing out runners for a time, which was ironic since he couldn't throw out anyone when he played SS, 2B and 3B in the minors.

Keith needs to go to a different organization to salvage his career.  He needs to get the hell away from Hinch's reflexive platooning.
