  1. This afternoon's lineup vs. lefty opener Sean Newcomb (2.76 ERA in 28 games):

  2. K McGonigle (L) 3B
  3. D Dingler (R) DH
  4. M Vierling (R) CF
  5. R Greene (L) LF
  6. S Torkelson (R) 1B
  7. K Carpenter (L) RF
  8. H Lee (R) 2B
  9. J Rogers (R) C
  10. Z McKinstry (L) SS

Carpenter with a rare start against a lefty.  I suppose Newcomb will probably only go 2 innings or so.  The Sox have 4 other lefty relievers available.
No Jones, though.
No Keith.  I read his wrist might still be sore but it could be because of the lefty opener.

Melton starting for the Tigers. Let's just hope his back is ok at this point.

Watching Hinch do a knee-jerk platoon PH of Jones for Carpenter, with no success yet again, reminds me of the simplistic AI managers in the computer baseball simulation games I loved from the late 80s and early 90s.

Though maybe the computer manager in Tony LaRussa Baseball could outmaneuver Hinch at this point.

LOL, I remember Tony LaRussa Baseball.  I also had Earl Weaver baseball from EA.  I think it had Ernie Harwell doing the "announcing" (or that might have been another simulation game).  Earl Weaver Baseball also had a programmable manager.  You could let "Earl" set the lineups but the lineups would often be goofy.  Then again, Hinch's lineups can't be much goofier.

Shockingly, the Tigers now lead 4-1 after 7.  Jake Rogers had a clutch RBI single with 2 outs in the 6th to extend the Tigers lead to 3-1 and Dingler homered in the 7th.

Melton allowed only 1 run on 1 hit (a 1st-inning leadoff homer to Antonacci) in 6 IP with 5 Ks and 3 walks.  Solid performance.

It was APBA Baseball for Windows that had Ernie Harwell doing the announcing.

I remember how if you set the Earl Weaver manager to speed-friendly it would steal on reflex with any passably fast player. Very Hinch-like in its rote strategy.

It wouldn't take much programming to create an A.I. version of Hinch for a simulator.

Tigers win 4-1.  Holton and Jansen finish it out with no damage.

If you like Baja Blast Mountain Dew, MLB has a giveaway right now whenever a player hits a homer that travels 420 feet or more. It just occurred to me that someone is trying to make a marijuana reference by choosing 420 as the minimum distance.

Anyway, if you want a free 20-ounce Baja Blast bottle, go to bajablasthomers.com and fill out the form. You'll get an email with a link to add the coupon to your phone's wallet. It looks like you have to register the day of or the day after a 420+ homer is hit. The coupon is good until Sept. 27, 2026, or until 500,000 have been redeemed. There's a limit on how many an individual can claim, too.

The marijuana and Mountain Dew reference reminds me of an encounter I had at the Carpenter Road Meijer back in the mid-1990s. I drank almost only Mountain Dew and Faygo back then, and as I went to return a shopping cart full of empty Mountain Dew cans a woman saw all of the cans and said something like, "You know, people who drink Mountain Dew are usually pot smokers, too."

I gave her a puzzled look because I've never smoked marijuana — or ingested it in any other way other than some second-hand smoke at concerts. I think she realized then that she should keep her thoughts to herself.

Anyway, go sign up for a free Baja Blast, if you so desire. If you haven't tried the Cabo Citrus flavor, I highly recommend it. It's supposed to be tangerine-lime something like that.

Dingler is our most reliable power hitter and lately perhaps our most reliable hitter period.  He consistently makes hard contact.

Combined with his excellent defense and leadership behind the plate he's our MVP so far.

I'm way more confident Dingler will do something positive in a clutch situation than the likes of Greene, Carp, Tork and even McGonigle.

Well, that's just, like, her opinion, man.
