The Franklin Perez Era is over.  He was released by the Tigers today.

On paper the JV trade didn't look that bad at the time as a salary dump deal.  Perez was a highly-rated pitching prospect who was in AA and was seen as being close to ready for the majors, Cameron looked like a possible future starting CF, and Rogers was a defense-first catching prospect with a great arm and some power potential as a hitter.  In retrospect, you've got to wonder if the Astros knew something about Perez's shoulder (just like I have suspicions about the Rays knowing something about Austin Meadows' mental health).

The Tigers also released IF Johan Camargo from Toledo and RHP Chavez Fernander from Erie.  Both were roster filler.  Fernander got a little bit of hype as a possible bullpen prospect a couple years ago but didn't pan out.  He's 26.

The 2017 Astros' top 50 prospect list had Perez at #6, Cameron at #9 and Rogers at #22.

Also ranked in the Astros' system that year were OF Michael Tucker (#2), P David Paulino (#3), OF Teoscar Hernandez (#7), OF Ramon Laureano (#8), 3B JD Davis (#13), OF Yordan Alvarez (#14), P Cionel Perez (#16) and P Framber Valdez (#30!).  Nearly all of those guys have had solid careers in the majors, and Tucker, Alvarez and Valdez are stars.

So Perez, Cameron and Rogers were ranked ahead of Valdez and Alvarez.  LOL!

The Astros' system was loaded back then.

Paulino, who was their #3 prospect at the time, was actually acquired from the Tigers as a PTBNL in the Jose Veras trade in 2013.  Paulino was 19 at the time and was pitching in rookie league for the Tigers.
Paulino pitched briefly in the majors for the Astros, Blue Jays and Phillies but never did much.  I think he had injuries.  He was done at age 27.  I'm surprised Al Avila didn't trade for him.

It just goes to show how fickle the rankings for minor league players are. I’d take a proven major league over a prospect every day of the week.

I remember wishing at the time that Tucker would have been part of the deal.

Can you imagine if the Tigers had gotten JD Davis, Yordan Alvarez, and Framber Valdez for JV? Tigers fans would have been even more PO'ed at the time. "Not even a top ten prospect?!?!?" lol

Of course, those guys probably wouldn't have developed to where they are now if they had been in The Tigers system. :(
