Tonight's lineup vs. lefty Christopher Sanchez (2.62 ERA in 19 starts).  Sanchez's ERA was below 2.00 until recently, but he got bombed for 9 runs on 12 hits in 3.1 IP in his last start vs. the Royals.

  1. Matt Vierling (R) CF
  2. Kevin McGonigle (L) 3B
  3. Dillon Dingler (R) DH
  4. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
  5. Riley Greene (L) LF
  6. Eduardo Valencia (R) C
  7. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B
  8. Ben Malgeri (R) RF
  9. Zach McKinstry (L) SS

Dingler back in the lineup.
Good luck to Valencia making his big-league catching debut.

Casey Mize (2.64 ERA in 13 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.

White Sox and Twins have already won today.  Guardians are leading the Marlins 2-0 in the 5th.

Sounds weird saying this, but I wish Rogers wasn’t sitting given how he’s on a mini hot streak. But I’m glad to have Dingler back in the lineup and to see Valencia get a start behind the plate and Tork has been a little better lately so I get it. Good problem to have.

We'll see if Rogers will come in for Valencia later in the game if it's a close game.

I have a feeling the Phillies will try running on Valencia a lot, but hopefully Mize will limit the baserunners.
At least the Phillies aren't a big basestealing team (Stott and Turner lead their team with 16 steals apiece).

Well, we're in a hole now.  Phillies lead 4-0 in the bottom of the 4th.
Derek HIll doing some damage again with a diving catch in CF and an RBI single.

More Derek Hill tonight. He already has a run scored, an RBI and 3 stolen bases!

Plus this kind of insane catch:

Phillies up 4-0 in the 4th.

Hill used to make catches like that all the time when he was coming up in the Tigers' system.
Too bad he could never develop as a hitter with the Tigers.
I guess because he still has elite speed he still gets work in the majors.

Valencia threw out Harper trying to steal in the top of the 5th so his caught stealing % is now 25.0...that's better than Dingler.  🙂

And now Valencia just hit a solo homer to right-center to lead off the bottom of the 5th.   Phillies lead 4-1.

Hill's steal of 3rd base in the 3rd inning was a very close call.  However, I don't think Hill even tries to steal 3rd on Rogers or Dingler on that play.
He scored on a sac fly after stealing 3rd.

Phillies lead 4-1 in the bottom of the 6th.  Mize goes 5-2/3 and allows 4 runs, 3 earned.  He didn't have his best stuff but kept us in the game.

Tigers lose 4-2.  They actually had 10 hits against Sanchez.  Tork hit into 2 double plays tonight with 2 men on and nobody out with the bases loaded and nobody out.  Ouch.

McGonigle's error contributing to an unearned run, and Derek Hill stealing 3rd (he might have been out but the Tigers didn't challenge it) ended up being the difference.

Phillies had 4 stolen bases in 5 attempts against Valencia.  Otherwise he seemed ok behind the plate.  Obviously he's not Dingler/Rogers, but I think he'd be fine as a guy who can play some DH/1B and occasionally start at catcher.

Valencia with a homer and a single tonight.  Reminds me a little bit of Miggy in his body type and swing.  Obviously not Miggy-level as a hitter, but he could be useful.
