According to MiLB, Cam Gibson has formally announced his retirement. The son of former Tigers great Kirk Gibson, the 27-year old was drafted in the fifth round in 2015 out of Michigan State. In over 1,700 minor league plate appearances, Gibson hit .241 with 42 HR and 98 stolen bases.

I saw that subject line and was thinking Kirk had retired from the booth, which would be an improvement in my opinion.

LOL..I was thinking the same thing. Morris isn't great but I prefer him to Gibby.

Gibby, Morris & TV play-by-play guy Matt Shepherd are not liked on a lot of the Tigers' forums.
Dan Petry joins them sometimes.  It's cool that those ex-Tigers' stars are part of the broadcast team but I understand why some fans don't think they add much to the broadcast.  Morris and Petry sometimes have some interesting things to say about pitching.  I feel bad for Gibby having Parkinson's.   Awful disease.  I had a friend die from it and another who is dealing with it.  Gibby was an overly competitive hotheaded jerk but I still loved him as a player.   I'll give him a break as an announcer even if he doesn't add much.

Radio announcer Dan Dickerson is much more popular among fans.

It's too bad Mario and Rod couldn't keep their dislike for each other out of the public eye. They got annoying at times but way better than what we have now.

I found Rod Allen almost as irritating as Jim Price.

Why do people in the forums not like Gibby?  I mean, his voice has never been broadcast quality but when I’ve heard him, he seems as insightful as any other ex-player.

Dickerson is not bad. We were spoiled with Ernie Harwell of course.

I wonder if his voice could be something to do with his Parkinson's?

Craig Monroe has some good analysis.  I really liked his comparison of Baddoo's swing to Barry Bonds.
No, Baddoo is unlikely to be the next Bonds (we wish!) but his swing is quite similar.
Apparently Baddoo has heavily studied Bonds, Ken Griffey, Jr. and Willie Mays's swings.  Cool!

Baddoo's enthusiasm and intensity is great.  He damn near got tosssed on a questionable called strike 3 in the 6th.  The ump gave Akil an earful about his immediate negative reaction to the strike call.   The ump was being a jerk but that's what umps do.  He just wanted to show the rookie his place.  Hinch put his arm around Baddoo in the dugout probably to tell him that as a rookie he needs to cool it with reacting to calls.

By the way, Baddoo has such a good eye at the plate I trust his judgment more than any ump's.  Hopefully Badoo will get more respect in the future.

Not if he keeps showing up the umps at the plate.

Oh yeah, it wasn't smart for Baddoo to react like that to a called strike 3 but the kid is just so hyped full of adrenalin right now.
Hinch and Lombard told him to cool it (just as I'm sure Hinch told Baddoo on Monday not to assume you've hit a homer and to run full out until the ump signals it).

Baddoo's strike zone judgment (so far) is really good for somebody with so little experience against advanced pitching.
Hopefully it will continue and as long as he doesn't get a reputation for being a hothead with umpires he'll start to get some respect and will get more close calls.

Hinch said Baddoo came running right to him on Monday night after that premature home run trot and profusely apologized.  He was embarrassed.  Hinch thought it was a mature way to handle it and chalked it up to a rookie mistake so no scolding or further "discipline".

I thought that same at bat was interesting for another reason.  Baddoo saw six pitches.  All of them were outside.  Two of them nicked the outside corner, and according to the ump, a third one did too.  If you looked at the box score and saw that Baddoo homered and struck out twice you might think he was up there hacking.  The interesting thing is that Baddoo didn’t swing at any of the six pitches.  Just watched six pitches go by.  Here’s a guy, a rookie no less, in the middle of an extra-base hit barrage, and he’s totally patient.  You can think of very patient hitters we’ve seen, like Paredes, they still swing sometimes.  It was only one at bat, but Baddoo seems to take it to another level.

Best Regards,

Michael

Baddoo swings like Barry Bonds, takes pitches like Barry Bonds.  🙂

Baddoo struggled a bit in 2 at-bats against the lefty starter last night.  Lefties are probably going to give him trouble (like most young lefty hitters).  In his other 2 AB against righties he struck out twice, but he was still patient and in his final strikeout he made a good swing but just missed it (I think it was on a 3-2 pitch).

Baddoo's minor league numbers showed he had good plate discipline, but the question was would he be able to make enough contact at higher levels.  He's looked pretty polished so far but we'll see how teams adjust.  There are signs he's a bit vulnerable to pitches up in the zone.
