20-year-old 1B-C Josue (pronounced "ho-sway") Briceno is beating up on pitchers in the Arizona Fall League.  Briceno hit 3 homers in a game last week and is hitting .469 with 5 homers in 32 at-bats.  The level of pitching in the AFL is mostly A-ball, but nevertheless Briceno has been impressive.  Briceno missed a few months of this past season with low-A Lakeland with a knee injury, so it remains to be seen if he'll go back to being a catcher.   He's been playing 1B and DH in the AFL.

Briceno got a few at-bats for the Tigers this past spring training and he impressed people with how hard he hit the ball.  He doesn't strike out excessively and draws a good number of walks.  Looks like he'll be moving up the prospect lists pretty fast.

And, yes, Briceno is yet another lefty hitter.

21-year-old C-1B Thayron Liranzo is also hitting well in the AFL as a teammate of Briceno's.    Liranzo is hitting .500 (8-16) with 1 homer in 16 AB.
Liranzo has started at catcher in 4 games.  Liranzo is a switch hitter.  He hit .315 with 5 homers in 115 AB for West Michigan this past season after coming over from the Dodgers' system in the Flaherty trade.

It would be nice if Briceno or Liranzo can be competent enough as catchers to stay there.  However, Briceno is more likely to end up at 1B.
We really need to develop a catching prospect who can actually hit.  Those are rare commodities.

Briceno looks good.  Still only 600 PA in his whole career.  From a development standpoint I would have liked him to hit for more power at Lakeland this year, but he’s making up for it in Arizona.  Liranzo has looked good since we got him, also a small sample, but nothing to complain about there.

20-year-old 1B Josue Briceno continues to put up monster numbers in the Arizona Fall League.  The lefty-hitting Briceno is batting .403/.478/.831 (1.309 OPS) with 9 homers in 77 AB.
Briceno has been drawing notice from scouts all over. He's currently the 9th-ranked prospect in the Tigers' system, but could jump into the top 5 or top 3 very soon.
Tork better start looking over his shoulder at this kid.

21-year-old switch-hitting C Thayron Liranzo is hitting .326/.463/.581 (1.044 OPS) with 1 homer in 43 AB.  Liranzo has 11 walks and only 9 Ks.  Liranzo reminds me a bit of a young Victor Martinez.

Briceno hit his 10th homer today.

The caveat about the Arizona Fall League is that the the level of pitching isn't very strong (probably A-ball or lower) and it has hitter-friendly ballparks.  Nevertheless, Briceno has been impressive.  He should start next season with upper-A West Michigan and see some time in AA if he hits well.  It's possible his ETA with Detroit could be some time in 2026.

Liranzo will probably start next season in AA and move up to AAA at some point.  His ETA with the Tigers is probably 2026.

Briceno won the AFL triple crown and MVP.    He hit .433 (39 for 90) with 15 walks.

From DetNews

"He won the AFL’s Triple Crown, the first to accomplish it. Toss in OPS and it was a clean, four-category sweep for a man who Saturday was named the 2024 AFL Most Valuable Player."

And he is only 20 years old.  He was a Latin America signing 4 years ago.  One of the only Latin players to show such promise.  The Tigers had reduced their staff as far as scouting down south.

Briceno could be on a fast track.  I doubt he'll be in the majors next year, but you could see him with Detroit in 2026 at some point especially if he hits well in high-A and AA next year.

He was both a catcher and 1B before his knee injury earlier this season, but he only played 1B and DH after coming off the IL.
By all accounts, he's not a great defensive catcher.  He'll probably end up just being a 1B/DH.  He's a lefty hitter so let's hope he can hit lefties well enough so that he's not another Kerry Carpenter, who only gets to play against righties.

Jonathan Mayo opines that Liranzo throws very well, but his receiving needs work.  He's only 21 years old though.

It doesn't sound like Liranzo is terrible defensively at catcher and just needs to work on some things.

It will also be interesting to see if Briceno goes back to catching next year.  Briceno reportedly still wants to be a catcher.
He is supposedly less polished defensively than some of the other catchers in the system.

The Tigers also have teenager Enrique Jimenez, who they signed for a $1.25 million signing bonus last year.  He played for the Florida Complex League Tigers this year.
Jimenez is reportedly very polished defensively for a young catcher.  He is a switch hitter.

So it does look like we've got some decent catching prospects in the pipeline.  Rogers and Dingler will probably cover the catcher spot for the next couple of years before the youngsters are ready.
