The Tigers did not take anyone in the major league portion of the draft. They did lose RJ Petit to Colorado with the #1 overall pick.

In the minor league portion, the Tigers lost Austin Murr, Archer Brookman, Danny Ceretti, and Travis Kuhn.

Also in the minor league portion, they picked up:

RHP Luke Taggart from COL
RHP Jan Caraballo from SF
RHP John Stankiewicz from MIN
RHP Yendy Gomez from LAA

I'd never heard of any of the guys we acquired, including the player from the Giants.

My understanding is the minor league part of the draft is limited to AAA players and teams pay to make a selection but there are no roster restrictions like there are for players selected in the major league portion.

Losing Petit reminds me of when we lost Candelario and Castro.  They weren’t great players but they had some value.  Petit has some value.  It’s a shame to give him up for nothing (ok, $50K) given some of the folks we kept on our roster.

I imagine we’ll see the same outcome for Malloy and Jung.  Just let go for nothing.

The Tigers never called up Petit last year even though a lot of the Toledo bullpen got the call.  Apparently there is something about him they don’t like.

Yeah, I don't know why they didn't protect Petit.  The guy is a physical monster (6'8", 300+ lbs).  He pitched well for Toledo last year (averaged almost 13 K/9).

I'm not sure going to Colorado will help him though.  It's a pitcher graveyard.   I hope they return him.

The could have DFA'd Drew Sommers or Chase Lee to protect Petit.

Lee had a good start with the big club last year. He was a pretty reliable setup guy for a brief time there.

I suspect the lack of a good fastball and "the book" getting out on him are what brought him back to replacement level.

Long winded way of agreeing that I'd have chanced leaving Lee unprotected.

Yeah, Lee lost effectiveness later in the season.  I didn't see much in Sommers when he pitched with the Tigers, but he's a lefty so they probably want to keep him around for now.

Petit throws a mid-90s fastball with a decent slider.  He's been trying to develop a change-up.
Supposedly his fastball command is kind of average.  He gets a lot of groundballs.

You'd think the Tigers would have given him a shot last year in their 2nd-half bullpen shuffle, but there must be something they don't like about him.
