This is vs. lefty Martin Perez.  Interesting that Tork is still batting 7th against a lefty.

Leave him there - it's working. :)

I feel Perez always pitches well against us. Could be a low scoring game if Mize is on (which he has been more often than not this season).

I somehow missed that the Tigers are now alone in first place in the Central. It’s only a half game lead over Cleveland, but we’ll take it for now.

Yeah, saw that last night when CLE lost. I didn't know we were even tied before that.

And Casey Mize just left the game in the third inning.  Sigh.  Here’s the play:

Hamstring pull?  Mize has had hamstring issues in the past.

Rough night for the Tigers.  They lose 5-2 (couldn't do anything against Martin Perez) and lose 2 players.

Mize's injury was a groin pull.

Baez got hurt as well.  He was carted off the field in the 5th after a possible ankle/lower leg injury on a slide at 1st base.

Sigh.

Assuming Baez is out for a while, that leaves Vierling as the primary CF and McGonigle at SS.

Benetti and Scales commented during tonight's broadcast that, if Javy is out, McGonigle is not just the primary SS, but the only one on the 40 man roster and not injured.

Mize & Baez are both having MRIs tomorrow but they both commented after the game that they don’t feel that bad.

See attached.

I believe McKinstry is due to come off the IL (he took batting practice this week), so he would likely be the backup SS if Baez is put on the IL.

SS Gage Workman is off to a hot start for Toledo, but he is not on the 40-man roster so would unlikely be called up.

It sounds like Mize might only miss his next start so he might not even go on the IL.  I'm sure the Tigers could do a bullpen game with somebody like Anderson starting for Mize's next turn in the rotation.

Bonus points to Mize for using the word "literally" correctly.

Mize & Baez both hit the DL after all.

De Jesus is back up… And Jace Jung gets another chance as he replaces Baez on the major-league roster.

Jung doesn't play SS, but he's on the 40-man so he was easy to call up.  McKinstry must not be quite ready to come off the IL.
I bet Jung is sent down for McKinstry soon.

Jung is hitting .222/.358/.364 with 2 homers in 123 PA for Toledo.

I guess the "emergency" shortstop could be Hao-Yu Lee or maybe Wenceel Perez (SS was his original position in the minors for several years) or maybe (yikes!) Gleyber Torres.

Yah, Wenceel made a lot of throwing errors but “a lot” is relative.  He can play shortstop in an emergency for sure, ahead of Lee, Jung or Torres.

Yes, Hinch confirms Lee is the back-up SS but says it's "not an ideal situation".

Too bad Perez stopped playing SS or 2B or 3B, but he had bigtime throwing yips.  He'd be more valuable as a utility man but the Tigers gave up on him as an infielder.

Perez has been hitting the ball hard since he was called up but was getting nothing to show for it, but in the last couple of games he's starting to get some better luck on balls in play.

Jung started at DH tonight and was 0-1 with a walk and a line out to CF.  The one thing Jung does well is draw walks.

I noticed the Red Sox used a lefty opener for 1 inning tonight, which kept Colt Keith out of the starting lineup.  The Tigers did score 2 runs in the first against the lefty Moran, but that was it for the night.  In the 2nd the Sox brought in righty Bryan Bello, who was originally supposed to start, and he proceeded to go 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and lowering his ERA to 7.44.  Keith never appeared in the game.  Carpenter did pinch hit for Jones in the 3rd, but Hinch left Lee in for the entire

Rough night for the Tigers.  They seem a bit shell-shocked with the Skubal news.
