This is vs. lefty Martin Perez.  Interesting that Tork is still batting 7th against a lefty.

Leave him there - it's working. :)

I feel Perez always pitches well against us. Could be a low scoring game if Mize is on (which he has been more often than not this season).

I somehow missed that the Tigers are now alone in first place in the Central. It’s only a half game lead over Cleveland, but we’ll take it for now.

Rough night for the Tigers.  They lose 5-2 (couldn't do anything against Martin Perez) and lose 2 players.

Mize's injury was a groin pull.

Baez got hurt as well.  He was carted off the field in the 5th after a possible ankle/lower leg injury on a slide at 1st base.

Sigh.

Assuming Baez is out for a while, that leaves Vierling as the primary CF and McGonigle at SS.

I believe McKinstry is due to come off the IL (he took batting practice this week), so he would likely be the backup SS if Baez is put on the IL.

SS Gage Workman is off to a hot start for Toledo, but he is not on the 40-man roster so would unlikely be called up.

It sounds like Mize might only miss his next start so he might not even go on the IL.  I'm sure the Tigers could do a bullpen game with somebody like Anderson starting for Mize's next turn in the rotation.

Jung doesn't play SS, but he's on the 40-man so he was easy to call up.  McKinstry must not be quite ready to come off the IL.
I bet Jung is sent down for McKinstry soon.

Jung is hitting .222/.358/.364 with 2 homers in 123 PA for Toledo.

Too bad Perez stopped playing SS or 2B or 3B, but he had bigtime throwing yips.  He'd be more valuable as a utility man but the Tigers gave up on him as an infielder.

Perez has been hitting the ball hard since he was called up but was getting nothing to show for it, but in the last couple of games he's starting to get some better luck on balls in play.

I noticed the Red Sox used a lefty opener for 1 inning tonight, which kept Colt Keith out of the starting lineup.  The Tigers did score 2 runs in the first against the lefty Moran, but that was it for the night.  In the 2nd the Sox brought in righty Bryan Bello, who was originally supposed to start, and he proceeded to go 7 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and lowering his ERA to 7.44.  Keith never appeared in the game.  Carpenter did pinch hit for Jones in the 3rd, but Hinch left Lee in for the entire

Rough night for the Tigers.  They seem a bit shell-shocked with the Skubal news.

Hanifee has already been lifted in the first inning for a "matchup".  The lefty Hurter came in to face the lefty Jensen with 2 runners on and got him out.
I wonder if they plan to use Hurter for several innings.

Tigers just took a 3-0 lead in the 2nd on a Hao-Yu Lee triple and a Matt Vierling 2-run double (he advanced to 3rd on an error by the LF).  All with 2 outs.  Zack Short even contributed with a 3-2 walk before Vierling hit the double.  (That's Short's one offensive skill, drawing walks.  He actually has a pretty good batting eye).

Nice to see Lee hit one hard.  He's been really scuffling.

Tork struck out swinging to end the top of the 3rd with 2 runners on.  It was Tork in a nutshell.  Andy Dirks, who is announcing on Peacock, was besides himself with Tork taking 2 very hittable pitches to fall into a 1-2 hole, and then he struck out swinging on a slider low and inside.  Terrible at-bat.

So Hinch took out Hurter to start the bottom of the 3rd and brought in Drew Anderson, who promptly has given up 2 hits to start the inning.
Hurter was pitching well.  Sigh.

Anderson has allowed 3 runs in 2 innings so it's tied 3-3 in the top of the 5th.

Anderson reminds me of Flaherty.  He can rack up strikeouts but throws too many mistakes.  He's been throwing 98-99 mph fastballs tonight and blew it by a couple of hitters, but he has Inconsistent command and poor pitch choices.  There is some talent there but he's frustrating to watch.

It’s not like the Tigers aren’t seeing a lot of pitches. They’ve been in quite a number of 3-2 counts, but usually they end up striking out or hitting weak fly balls.

Kansas City starter Cameron threw 95 pitches in 4 innings. In one of those zones again where they just can’t get the key hits.

3-3 in the 5th though the Tigers have two runners on with two outs….And before I can hit send, Perez weakly grounds out to the pitcher to end the inning.  Just more hitting frustration!

After McGonigle led off the 5th with a single, Colt Keith had an absolute meatball in the 5th on a 3-1 count and just sat there watching it like a house by the side of the road, and then eventually flied out to LF on the 3-2 counts.  Terrible at-bat.  Dirks and Hosmer in the announcing booth were flabbergasted that Keith didn't crush the 3-1 pitch.

In the same inning Dingler was ahead 3-1 and swung at ball 4 and then struck out on the 3-2 pitch.

Perez needs to go back to AAA.  He's pretty much useless.

Game tied 3-3 after 5.  DeJesus set the Royals down 1-2-3 in the 5th.

A little Reverse Voodoo works on Perez as he singles home Greene in the 7th.  Tigers lead 6-3 going into the bottom of the 7th.

Perez then tried to steal 3B with Alex Lange pitching and was thrown out at 3rd with Tork batting.   I guess they thought Lange might throw one of his crazy curveballs in the dirt, but he threw a fastball and Perez was thrown out easily.

Finnegan is coming in with 1 out in the 7th.  I'm sure we'll see Jansen eventually.

Kenley with the 1-2-3 save including 2 Ks.  No drama!
Tigers win 6-3.

Gage Tater Workman wins player of the game.  Yes, that's right, "Tater" is his legal middle name.
Workman also started an excellent 5-6-3 DP in the 8th on Witt, Jr. to bail out Finnegan, who looked on the ropes.
McGonigle made a great turn and throw on the DP and Witt was out by a couple of inches.  Great call by the 1st base ump.

Tonight's lineup vs. righty Christian Scott (3.27 ERA in 3 starts):

  1. Kevin McGonigle (L) 3B
  2. Dillon Dingler (R) C
  3. Colt Keith (L) DH
  4. Riley Greene (L) LF
  5. Matt Vierling (R) CF
  1. Zach McKinstry (L) 2B
  2. Zack Short (R) SS

Yes, that's right, Short gets a start at SS vs. a righty.
Workman sits on the bench.  Yes, I know Workman committed a boneheaded error last night, but he's hit a homer and a double in his first 2 games and he hits righties well.
I know Hinch tries to put out a better defensive infield behind the groundball specialist Valdez, but is Short really an improvement over, say, McGonigle or McKinstry at SS.  The Tigers' infield defense pretty much sucks regardless of who they put out there, so why not just try to maximize offense?
Be prepared for another frustrating evening of Tigers' baseball...we'll see.

Top 4 in this lineup are decent, but the bottom 5 of this lineup is terrible.

I like Perez, but he really needs to go back to AAA.  He's looking more and more like a AAAA player.
Vierling just doesn't provide much.  At this point he's nothing more than a righty Parker Meadows without the defense.
Tork just plain sucks.  I really hope Josue Briceno can get healthy and develop into a better hitting 1B option than Tork.
McKinstry has turned back into a pumpkin after his once-in-a-lifetime All-Star spot last year.

Game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th.
Valdez had a very good start tonight, but Finnegan allowed an inherited runner to score in the 7th with 2 outs to tie it.  Sigh.

Tonight's lineup vs. Cleveland in Detroit.
Righty Slade Cecconi (5.60 ERA in 9 starts) vs. lefty Framber Valdez (4.32 ERA in 9 starts).
Cecconi is the Guardians' worst starter and is very hittable, so, of course, the Tigers will likely have a hard time scoring against him.

  1. Colt Keith (L) DH
  1. Riley Greene (L) LF
  1. Zack Short (R) SS

Apart from J-Ram and rookie OF Chase DeLauter, Cleveland's lineup is pretty weak as usual (but they still win more than they lose), but they have annoying hitters who usually give the Tigers trouble.
Steven Kwan only has a .596 OPS so fully expect him to beat up on the Tigers.  And, yes, Austin Hedges of the career .187 batting average and current leading sub-Mendoza home run leader is starting at catcher.  Fully expect him to hit one out.

As usual, the Guardians have a good bullpen.  Cade Smith is a tough closer.

I know it's only mid-May, but this seems like a huge series for the Tigers, otherwise they'll dig a further hole behind Cleveland in the central.  I'll take a split, but 1-3 might actually be an achievement.

At one point, the Tigers had the second most injuries in all of MLB.  Certainly easy to argue that having Skubal & Mize in the rotation al season would’ve resulted in at least a couple of more wins rather than all these bullpen games.

But of course, truthfully, not many noteworthy injuries to the hitting lineup beyond maybe Carpenter and Torres.  No one could possibly argue that not having McKinstry & Meadows on the DL early in the season is the difference between winning and losing :-)

But there is something to be said for having a mostly healthy team-the one you planned for to start the season. And we definitely saw a hit to the morale when the Skubal injury was announced.

Typical Tigers game this year. I check the score early and we’ve got a lead and maybe this is the game where the offense breaks out. Then half an hour later we’ve stopped scoring and our starter has given up a handful of runs (now 4-1 Cleveland in the 5th).

This has been a bottom-tier hitting team since July last year and that’s with the addition of McGonigle, and improvement of Greene and Dingler this year.  The offensive core is dependent on Tork, Keith, Torres, and Carpenter to supplement those guys and it hasn’t happened.  Torres was ok with drawing a lot of walks and getting a few singles before he got hurt but his power is gone.
The Tigers’ role players have been a miserable failure.
The offense was doing ok for a little while earlier this season but has tanked.

There isn’t much help on the horizon at a Toledo.  Max Clark has stalled out after a good start at AAA.  Clark’s lack of power is concerning.  He’s still very young for AAA but he’s unlikely to help the Tigers any time soon. Jace Jung and Max Anderson might be able to help but they are limited defensively and seem like Hinch platoon players.
Josue Briceno, who was part of the “Big 3” prospect group is injured and could miss the season.

As we discussed during spring training, it was a gamble by Harris to rely only on internal improvements for the hitting. Obviously, McGonigle has been a big addition but expecting improvement from *all* of the players who slumped in the back half of last season was always going to be a bit of a tall order.

I guess I left out another hitting injury below: Javy Baez. Certainly have to believe he’d be giving us more than Zach Short (not a high bar to clear!) but also unlikely to be the difference in winning vs losing games very often.

Tork isn't so clutch, he grounded into a force out with runners at 1st and 2nd in the 9th, so he's now 0-4 and his OPS is a whopping .671.

Tonight's "re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic" lineup vs. 25-year-old lefty Parker Messick (2.35 ERA in 9 starts).
Keider Montero (3.65 ERA in 8 starts) on the mound for the Tigers.

  1. Matt Vierling (R) CF  (.857 OPS vs. lefties)
  2. Kevin McGonigle (L) 3B (.706 OPS vs. lefties)
  3. Jahmai Jones (R) DH (.686 OPS vs. lefties, was .970 vs. lefties last year)
  4. Dillon Dingler (R) C (.574 OPS vs. lefties)
  5. Riley Greene (L) LF (1.027 OPS vs. lefties)
  6. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B (.628 OPS vs. lefties, was .884 OPS vs. lefties last year)
  7. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF (.565 OPS vs. lefties)
  8. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B (.695 OPS vs. lefties)
  9. Zack Short (R) SS (.500 OPS vs. lefties, but has .500 OBA vs. lefties with 3 walks in 6 PA...LOL!).

Can we clone Greene and McGonigle and make multiple copies?

It’s pouring rain at the moment so maybe we will be spared.

And we lose again 4-3.
Why did Hinch pinch hit Keith for Tork in the 8th?  Tork hits righties better than lefties this year and he had already hit a homer.  Tork at least has a chance to hit a homer, Keith has almost no chance.   Pinching hitting Keith for Tork also led to Jahmai Jones having to bat against the righty Cade Smith in the 9th.  Jones was called out on strikes with runners at 1st and 2nd an 1 out in the 9th.

Stephen Vogt keeps outmanaging Hinch over and over.

Keith is more likely to get a hit which is what the Tigers needed (first and third, one out, one down). The problem is that it led to McKinstry also hitting in the 8th (PH for Lee) and he made an out to end the inning.

I’d rather see Tork and Keith hit than Keith and McKinstry, but I think it’s a defensible move from Hinch.

The Tigers are now the third worst team in the league and fourth worst in MLB.

They were 18-17 and in 1st place the day Skubal was placed on the DL. They are 2-12 since.

In the 8th inning, Jones walked to lead off the inning against the lefty Tim Herrin, Dingler then took a called strike 3 (not surprising since Dingler sucks against lefties for some reason), and then Greene was hit by a pitch.  The Guardians then brought in righty Hunter Gaddis to face Tork with runners at 1st and 2nd, but Hinch pinch hit Keith for Tork, who hits righties better than lefties and had homered earlier.

Keith hit into a 3-6 force play to put runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs.  Perez then walked to load the bases, but McKinstry hit a chopper to the 1st baseman Manzardo to leave the bases loaded.

I know it was a defensible move by Hinch to pinch hit Keith for Tork in that situation, but after it didn't work, Hinch was forced to bat Jones in the 9th against Cade Smith, which was a terrible mismatch and predictably Jones struck out.  In the 8th inning, Hinch went all in with the matchups, but came up empty when Keith didn't get a hit or walk.

This team just doesn't have many hitting options right now.  Hinch's platoon magic is completely gone this year.

The hitters decided to fall asleep after Skubal needed surgery.  So much for stepping up.  I bet Cleveland wouldn't have done that.  I hate the Guardians, but I respect that they just seem very resilient and better than the sum of their parts.  I have respect for AJ Hinch, but Stephen Vogt continues to leave Hinch in the dust in head-to-head contests.  It's very frustrating.

  1. Tonight's lineup vs. righty Jack Kochanowicz (4.55 ERA in 10 starts).  Last year Kochanowicz gave up 12 runs in 8 innings in 2 starts vs. the Tigers.  So, of course, that means he'll shut us out this year.

    1. Colt Keith (L) DH
    2. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
    3. Zach McKinstry (L) SS
    4. Gage Workman (L) 2B
    1. Matt Vierling (R) CF
    2. Wenceel Pérez (S) RF

Keider Montero gets the start for the Tigers.  Mike Trout is in the Angels' lineup.  I seem to remember that we haven't faced Trout that much in the last couple of years because he's always injured.  Trout isn't the same hitter he used to be but he still has a .399 OBA, .889 OPS and 13 homers.  Tork can only fantasize having those numbers.

The Angels just swept the Rangers but they are 20-34 and last in the AL West.

Tonight's power-packed Tigers' lineup vs. righty Jose Soriano (2.44 ERA in 11 starts).  Soriano is having an excellent season.  He keeps the ball on the ground and he gets a good number of Ks.

      1. Colt Keith (L) 3B
      1. Kevin McGonigle (L) SS
      1. Dillon Dingler (R) C
      1. Riley Greene (L) LF
      1. Zach McKinstry (L) RF
      1. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
      1. Wenceel Pérez (S) CF
      1. Gage Workman (L) DH
      1. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B

So Hinch rewards Wenceel Perez for his quality defense in RF by moving him to CF.   LOL!  The nightmare never ends for us Tigers' fans.
Vierling gets benched for a game in CF after an absolutely lazy throw in the game last night.

Casey Mize (2.47 ERA in 8 starts) gets the start for the Tigers.  Mize has has allowed 2 runs or less in 7 of his 8 starts, and 1 run or less in 4 of his 8 starts but his W-L is only 2-3.

Soriano has been talked about as a Cy Young candidate all season. He should be like a kid at the candy store tonight going through this Tigers lineup.
