And with the fifth win in a row we are now 12-7, and .500 since the hot start. Only 1/2 game
back of Cleveland, as KC won again against the Tribe this afternoon.
A few observations:
Chris Shelton finally coming back to earth? Even with the recent "slump" he's still hitting
.371. In my limited observation it seems that while compared to last year he's still walking
at a good rate but he's striking out more? Perhaps he's elongated his swing with the big
power numbers he put up in the first two weeks?
Is Craig Monroe the new Rob Deer? Deer probably walked more, but Monroe has shown
good power early in the year with a lot of Ks and a low batting average. Still, if other guys
are getting on base, I can tolerate a .217 average and big homerun number from the 7-8th
place hitter in the order.
It's a very small sample size, but I like not having a designated closer. Rodney got the call
and the save last night, and today he put out the fire in the 8th and set it up for Jones. Perhaps
it's as much a function of Leyland not wanting to use Jones two days in a row as anything
else, but it's nice to have two guys who can get the job done in the closer role, and despite
the poor outing today I'm sure Zumaya will get his chance eventually as well.

Another solid Tiger victory today, 6-4 over the Mariners. The only reason it was close was because of a bad 8th inning from Zumaya in relief.
Tigers lead 6-1 going into the inning on the strength of a Craig Monroe 3-run homer and a dominant performance from Justin Verlander. He gave up only 1 run on 4 hits and didn't even allow a hit until the 5th inning with 2 outs.
Todd Jones did not do the roller coaster thing and instead set them down 1-2-3 in the 9th for his second save of the series.
What a roadtrip so far. 5 wins in a row after the first loss in Oakland!
