Why? Do they really not like the idea of Ramon Santiago batting?
Because, while Perez is a sucky hitter (.269/.299/.378 career),
Santiago is a really sucky hitter (.226/.292/.298 career). Perez
isn't even particularly fast, with 56 steals since 1996.
Heck, why not just give Rafael Belliard a bat and make him a player-
coach? It would save them several thousand dollars. Perez is making
$2.5 million this year; Santiago $375,000. Perez is also signed for
next year.
Chris Robinson is a catcher who was doing OK at Lakeland: .
288/.338/.367 with 47 RBI in 94 games. He was the Tigers' third-round
pick in the 2005 June draft from the University of Illinois.
This certainly was not a trade to help the offense. I wouldn't have
made this trade unless Leyland really wanted someone even marginally
better than Santiago.
Later, David
Ugh. Why?
To make it worse, he's apparently going to actually be allowed to play.
A couple quotes from the AP article:
"He's a legitimate everyday player and an outstanding utility player,"
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said.
and...
Dombrowski said he is confident Polanco can come back this season,
adding Perez can help after Polanco returns because he's a
switch-hitter. Dombrowski acknowledged that he talked to several teams
about players that could help the Tigers at second base.

I'd like to see someone try to put a positive spin on this trade. I
guess Perez is probably a little better than Santiago, but there are
probably 30 guys in AA that are better than both of them.

But the real reasoning lies in his ability
to play not just second, but third and short,
too. The Tigers have had virtually no days
off, and, even with Leyland's Roger-cited
juggling act, there are some guys who have
sat out virtually none at all. The biggest,
in addition to Ordonez? Inge and Guillen.
They have to be tired, and, as the season
starts to near its end, a true utility
infielder with experience will help.
Enjoy,
Tim

First off, I'm quite certain that Mr. Parker was being sarcastic. He was
basicly trying to tell us that this move is a big nothing to him, that the
Tigers didn't get anybody worth getting and didn't give up anybody worth
complaining about.

I don't know anything about Mr. Perez's defense, but I do know that Ramon
Santiago was supposed to be a pretty good gloveman. And he did make at
least a few really good plays in the field.

Since his recall five games ago, Mr. Santiago has had zero at-bats, and one
inning in the field. That's certainly not a great vote of confidence from
his manager. I get the feeling that Mr. Leyland has seen enough from Ramon
Santiago to know that he wants someone else, especially if these games are
going to be significant to the chances of a division championship.
On the other hand, despite the quotes in the press today, I am certain that,
if the Tigers win anything of significance this year, neither Mr. Perez nor
Mr. Santiago will be given a first-class ring.
