Tonight's Lineup vs. The Orioles (7/27)

Tonight's lineup in Detroit vs. righty Kyle Bradish (3.49 ERA in 20 starts).  I expect the Tigers won't be able to do much against Bradish, who keeps the ball on the ground but also can rack up some Ks.

1. Kevin McGonigle (L) SS
2. Dillon Dingler (R) C
3. Colt Keith (L) 3B
4. Riley Greene (L) DH
5. Spencer Torkelson (R) 1B
6. Zach McKinstry (L) RF
7. Hao-Yu Lee (R) 2B
8. James Outman (L) CF
9. Matt Vierling (R) LF

Woof, Toledo might be able to put out a better lineup from 5-9 (excluding Lee).   

Kerry Carpenter is not playing because of his nagging sore heel issue.

Keider Montero (3.14 ERA in 22 games, 16 starts) is on the mound for the Tigers.  I wonder if Montero was in the bullpen instead we might have won a couple of those games the bullpen blew recently.  Losing Flaherty to the IL kind of forced Montero back into the rotation, though.

I like Montero as a starter, but he's probably our best reliever as well.

The O's at 51-55 are kind of in the same boat as the Tigers right now, desperately trying to stay relevant in the playoff race.  Time is running out for both teams.  If either team gets swept they can probably pack it in for this season.

Uh-oh, Tigers trail 3-0 in the 2^nd already.  Montero isn't fooling them much early and a Colt Keith error in the 2nd didn't help either.

Tigers had 2 men on and 1 out in the bottom of the 1st, but Greene struck out on a 3-2 pitch after being ahead 3-0 and Tork grounded out (Tork getting close to Mendoza again).  Sigh.

This team is so lifeless right now.

Montero is laboring through 3, he allowed another run in the 3rd but he managed to get out of a 1-out bases-loaded jam with no more damage.

Lee with a sac fly for the Tigers in the 2nd after a McKinstry triple.  

Tigers trail 4-1 in the bottom of the 3rd.

Tigers scrape out a couple of runs in the 4th on a Lee infield hit and Vierling SF. But because it's the Tigers and we are who we are there's a downside to call out - Bases loaded, nobody out, a run in.... and they only got the Vierling SF after that.

Now Montero gives up a homer and it's 5-3 BAL in the 5th.  Keider is now out of the game.

It's getting out of hand.  Hanifee just gave up a 2-run shot to Coby Mayo.  O's lead 7-3 in the 5th.

Too bad Montero had his worst outing of the season.  He just had nothing tonight.  O's were jumping all over him from the start.

By the way, can the Outhouse, I mean, Outman Era be over?  Just activate Baez whether he's ready or not.

It was up to the Tigers players and they had the table set with the Royals and Orioles in town and they’re clearly blowing it. 

Can’t have any complaining from Skubal & others about how they should be going for it at the trade deadline. You blew it guys!

After Greene, the Tigers' outfielders this year have to be the worst group in baseball:  Vierling, Outman, Jones, Perez, Baez, Meadows, McKinstry, and, yes, Carpenter (-0.5 WAR, .692 OPS). 

Did Scott Harris really think was going to be a productive outfield?

Shockingly, the Tigers had a rare "outburst" of 5 runs tonight, but, of course, they lose anyway 8-5.

A rare bad outing from a Tigers' starter not named Valdez.  I hasn't happened very often.  Bad time for it to happen.

With Carp on the IL, and Greene as the DH, the Tigers outfield was McKinstry, Outman, and Vierling.  That’s the worst outfield I’ve seen for a very long time.  Wenceel and Meadows were better.  Maybe some of the Randy Smith teams had worse?

Not a Randy Smith team, but the 119-loss 2003 team had a regular outfield of Craig Monroe (1.0 WAR, 97 OPS+), Alex Sanchez (0.2 WAR, 84 OPS+) and Bobby Higginson (0.3 WAR, 88 OPS+).  Backup outfielders were Gene Kingsale (-0.6 WAR, 48 OPS+), Ben Petrick (0.2 WAR, 75 OPS+), and Andres Torres (-0.9 WAR, 53 OPS+).  That's a pretty awful group.

As regular outfield that was pretty bad, but as a one-off, today’s was in another category entirely.  The OPS+ of today’s group:  61, 59 and 48.  

Not to mention Higginson was a fine player overall, and Monroe had some respectable seasons.

Sadly, 2003 was one of Higginson's worst seasons.  He was 32 and in decline.  He was a good player stuck on some bad teams.

In 2004 he had a better season (.742 OPS), but he was out of baseball by mid-2005 at age 34.

If the 2003 Tigers ever had Kingsale, Petrick and Torres in the same lineup then that would rival yesterday's outfield in terms of awfulness.
