Montero had been terrible with Toledo. Only reason he was called up was he was on the 40-man and they needed someone to replace Paddack temporarily in the long reliever role. They needed a body. I was hoping Hinch could avoid having to use Montero while
he's on the team, but Flaherty only being able to go 4 innings kind of forced him to use Montero.
Montero has talent, but he keeps making too many mistakes and throws hangers and meatballs. He'll pitch well for a couple of innings, but then make too many mistakes. Flaherty has been that way as well. Fetter and the pitching braintrust have their work
cut out for them with Montero, and they can't seem to help Flaherty this year the way they did last year.
With Finnegan out for a couple of weeks (hopefully no more than that), we really need Urquidy and Lange to be called up and be effective in their roles. I'm not sure Lange is up to it. Urquidy might be better than Paddack and K. Montero is a long relief/swingman
role. Holton and Hanifee need to get sharper as well. Melton and Vest are going to have to be lights out. That's a tough to expect the rookie Melton to become a "lights out" high-leverage reliever right away. We'll see.
Going into the playoffs I can't say I'm optimistic about the pitching staff.
