Tigers lose 7-5 as Flaherty was ineffective again (4 runs in 4 IP).  Good news is that Parker Meadows was activated and hit a 2-run homer, drew a walk, and made a nice diving catch in CF.

White Sox are a much-improved club lately and no pushover.

Montero also showed why he was sent to Toledo. This game was winnable with better bullpen management.

Don't worry, Paddack will replace Montero soon.  🙁

To open a spot on the 26-man roster for Meadows, Kyle Finnegan was placed on the 15-day IL with a right adductor strain. That's a groin/inner thigh muscle. It's retroactive to Monday, which is the day after the last game in which he pitched, so he can be activated as soon as Sept. 16.

We can't have good things.  Hinch is really going to have to be creative with the bullpen now.  I wonder if he'll try Melton in the Finnegan role?

Montero had been terrible with Toledo.  Only reason he was called up was he was on the 40-man and they needed someone to replace Paddack temporarily in the long reliever role.  They needed a body.  I was hoping Hinch could avoid having to use Montero while he's on the team, but Flaherty only being able to go 4 innings kind of forced him to use Montero.

Montero has talent, but he keeps making too many mistakes and throws hangers and meatballs.  He'll pitch well for a couple of innings, but then make too many mistakes.  Flaherty has been that way as well.  Fetter and the pitching braintrust have their work cut out for them with Montero, and they can't seem to help Flaherty this year the way they did last year.

With Finnegan out for a couple of weeks (hopefully no more than that), we really need Urquidy and Lange to be called up and be effective in their roles.  I'm not sure Lange is up to it.  Urquidy might be better than Paddack and K. Montero is a long relief/swingman role.  Holton and Hanifee need to get sharper as well.  Melton and Vest are going to have to be lights out.  That's a tough to expect the rookie Melton to become a "lights out" high-leverage reliever right away. We'll see.

Going into the playoffs I can't say I'm optimistic about the pitching staff.

Meadows seems to do well in his first game off the IL then disappears.  He had a good game when he came off the IL earlier this season then went into a terrible slump and got injured again.

If Hinch can limit Meadows' at-bats to only against righties that might help.

Sewald could be in the bullpen mix as well, but who knows how effective he'll be.

Melton is on an innings limit so that’s why he’s only in the pen. But he’s an obvious choice to replace Finnegan in the set up role.

Melton is probably our 2nd best starter, but because of his innings limit he'll be in the bullpen the rest of the way.
With Finnegan out, we definitely need him in the bullpen.

Hinch is going to need a lot of magic to maintain an effective bullpen the rest of the season and into the playoffs.
