We're at Principal Park again to see the Mudhens take on the Iowa Cubs.  Mudhens lead 6-3 in the middle of the 4th inning, on the strength of home runs by Gage Workman (playing RF tonight) and Thomas Nido (???).

I was  happy to get a chance to see Sawyer Gipson-Long pitch, since  I assume he's likely to be called up at some point.  He has not impressed at all.

Workman just showed off his throwing arm from RF to hold an I-Cub runner at 3rd on what looked like a sure chance to score from 2nd on a single to RF.

Gary Jones has apparently seen enough  of Gipson-Long tonight, as Nick Sandlin
is replacing him with one out in the bottom of the 4th. (Or Gipson-Long reached his pitch limit. He's thrown 70 pitches.)

Workman has gone 6-14 since being demoted.  He could barely make contact against major league pitchers (apart from his first 2 games), but no problem with AAA pitchers.  Definition of a AAAA player.

Max Clark 0-5 with 3 Ks tonight.  Woof!  So much for all the nice things being written about him lately.  LOL!

SGL hasn't been the same pitcher since Tommy John surgery.  He actually looked fairly promising a couple of years ago.
Some pitchers don't recover from TJS.

Tomas Nido sticking around in the crusty veteran catcher "Crash Davis" role.

Mudhens won, 8-4.  The Mudhens and the I-Cubs went into this series apparently pretty evenly matched with similar records, which could only be described as mediocre if one were inclined to be quite generous.  In three games, the Mudhens are 3-0 and have outscored the I-Cubs 34-6.

BTW, Peter, I am quite happy with Nido as the third catcher on the Tigers depth chart.  He's clearly a competent defensive catcher and the stereotypical veteran presence in the clubhouse. I hope that the Tigers do not have to call him up this season, but not sure he would be worse than Rogers, given how Rogers is hitting this year.

Yep, good for Nido.  Pretty sure if Rogers got hurt, Nido would be called up and not Valencia or Liranzo.  Nido is ok defensively.  Valencia is weak defensively, and Liranzo is still in AA and is young and still needs a lot of work on his hitting and catching.
