Justin Verlander had another good start tonight for the Giants.  He allowed 1 run on 4 hits in 7 IP tonight vs. the Dodgers.  He lowered his ERA to 3.94.
The Giants only scored 1 run in support of Verlander, but they scored 4 runs in the top of the 10th to win 5-1.

JV was dominant until the 7th when he gave up a solo homer, a double and a couple of well struck outs. He did complete the 7th and threw over 100 pitches.

Giants were the home team and won on a walkoff GS.

Verlander's opposing starting pitcher, Yoshi Yamamoto, had a 1-hitter with 10 Ks and 1 walk in 7 innings.
Yamamoto keeps having brilliant starts ruined by the Dodgers' bullpen and poor run support.  Sounds like Skubal's luck.

I remember in the opening series between the Tigers and Dodgers this year, the Dodgers looked very intimidating and seemed like a team that would win 110+ games.  It hasn't gone that way for the Dodgers.  Their starting pitching and bullpen have been very sketchy, especially their bullpen, and their hitting has been a bit disappointing.  They will still make the playoffs (like the Tigers), but they aren't a juggernaut.

San Francisco is now only half a game out of a wildcard spot.  So you never know… JV could pitch in a postseason game again!

But we have Alex Cobb for post-season, right?

Verlander threw 7 shutout 3-hit innings for the Giants on Wednesday vs. Arizona.
He has a 2.63 ERA in 12 starts since the All-Star break.

I guess Charlie Morton is younger so that's why Scott Harris wanted him instead.  ;-)

I have no idea if Verlander was ever available at the deadline, but there was talk the Giants were shopping him around.  They were smart to hang on to JV because they got back into the Wild Card race after the deadline and JV has been excellent for them, although they are 3.0 back and probably won't quite make it.

I wouldn't have minded trading decent catching prospect Enrique Jimenez for JV, but trading Jimenez for Chris Paddack was just plain dumb and desperate by Harris.  He got fleeced by the Twins.  Jimenez is becoming one of the better catching prospects in baseball.

Remember, Alex Cobb has the same salary as Verlander.  Did the Tigers even consider signing JV this past off-season?  Harris was fixated on Cobb, who was probably going to retire if Harris didn't offer him $15 million.

I've liked some of the things Harris has done since he took over, but this year was not his best.

Well, JV definitely has earned another contract for next year if he still plans to pitch.  His performance the other night still didn’t earn him a win though as the Giants took the lead after he was out of the game.

So on his chase for 300 victories, he has not made much progress. Still only 3 wins on the season which has only moved him to 265 lifetime.

But obviously, he has moved up the strikeout list and I’m sure in other categories as well.

Justin Verlander had another good start today at Coor's Field in Colorado in his final outing of the season as the Giants won 4-3.
He allowed 2 runs (both on solo homers) on 5 hits and 1 walk in 6 IP.  He struck out 7.

It's too bad he won't be pitching in post-season.  The Giants are 80-81 and are out of the WC hunt.

JV finishes 4-11 (thanks to horrible run support and bullpen support) with a 3.85 ERA.  He had a really good 2nd half (2.99 ERA in 14 starts).

JV is 42 (43 in February).  Maybe he should just retire after having a pretty good season, but I suspect he'll want to come back.

In retrospect, the Tigers should have signed him instead of Alex Cobb, but I have no idea if they ever talked to JV, or he even was interested in signing with the Tigers.
Also, I don't think he was available at the deadline since the Giants were trying to make a run.

That’s career win #266 so he squeezes in one more win on that likely futile quest for 300 :-)

I’d be surprised if JV hangs it up after this good second half. I’m sure he will secure at least a 1-year offer from someone this off-season.

Watch, the Tigers will sign Verlander and he'll be terrible and retire at the All-Star break.

Today’s game was in San Francisco; still a nice start from JV.

He was also durable this season; I only remember him missing a start or two.

Verlander and Melton battling it out for our #5 spot next spring? :)
