Verlander threw 7 shutout 3-hit innings for the Giants on Wednesday vs. Arizona.
He has a 2.63 ERA in 12 starts since the All-Star break.
I guess Charlie Morton is younger so that's why Scott Harris wanted him instead. ;-)
I have no idea if Verlander was ever available at the deadline, but there was talk the Giants were shopping him around. They were smart to hang on to JV because they got back into the Wild Card race after the deadline and JV has been excellent for them, although
they are 3.0 back and probably won't quite make it.
I wouldn't have minded trading decent catching prospect Enrique Jimenez for JV, but trading Jimenez for Chris Paddack was just plain dumb and desperate by Harris. He got fleeced by the Twins. Jimenez is becoming one of the better catching prospects in baseball.
Remember, Alex Cobb has the same salary as Verlander. Did the Tigers even consider signing JV this past off-season? Harris was fixated on Cobb, who was probably going to retire if Harris didn't offer him $15 million.
I've liked some of the things Harris has done since he took over, but this year was not his best.
