I didn’t realize how close we came to losing this game, even given that I knew we were down heading to the 9th. 

—Lee bats in the tying and go ahead runs with two outs.

—McG and Tork combined for a great play to get the second out in the 9th.

—Tork saves the tying and possibly winning runs from scoring with a great scoop on a throw from McKinstry to end it.

Also, Hinch with a couple of decisions of the type that we sometimes wish he’d do more of:

—Outman brought in as a PR with the team down one in the 9th and he steals a base

—No knee jerk move to Jansen or even Finnegan with the lead in the 9th; Montero left in to finish it. 

Of course, if one of those B9 plays I mentioned above went differently I’d have wondered why Hinch pressed his luck with Montero. ;)

Got to give credit to Tork.  His defense in the 9^th saved us.  Too bad he's not hitting but I think we just need to realize Tork is probably never going to break out as a hitter.  He's about a league average hitter, which means he's below average of what you usually expect from a 1B/DH.  He shouldn't be batting higher than 7th. Let's hope Josue Briceno can develop into a better-hitting 1B/DH than Tork.   

I still wonder if Tork would do better in another organization and in a more power-hitter friendly ballpark. It might be time to move on from him after this season.

I think we’ll just have to live with Tork. Guys who hit 30 home runs a year are at least somewhat valuable :-)

I think I mentioned this earlier in the year but only 35 players in Tigers history have hit 100 or more home runs in a Tigers uniform. Tork will soon be the 36th as he now has 98. 

10 more this season moves him past Ordonez into 30th all-time.

I will always have a soft spot for Tork because he was the first Tiger my son (who is 6) got attached to. My sister knew somebody who knew somebody and managed to get him a personalized autographed ball that he has on a shelf in his room. (When we were at a game, visiting  Detroit last week Tork even  rewarded his fandom with a homer!)

That said, I am well aware of Tork's shortcomings. But Torkelson is Joe Shlabotnik to my kid's Charlie Brown. 😉

I think Tork is one of the major keys to this team having a chance for the playoffs.

We need him to get hot in the last 2+ months.  He's off to a good start in this series, with 2 game-saving defensive plays (his defense is normally below average) and a 2-homer game with 4 RBIs.

His 3-run homer in the 1st inning last night helped give Skubal some rare early cushion to work with.  Skubal is not used to having a 6-0 in the 2^nd inning.  He's usually pitching in some 0-0, 1-0, 2-1 type game by the 5^th inning.

Interesting that despite Tork's woes with the bases-loaded, which is one reason fans frustrated with him, he's hitting .238/.355/.497 (.852 OPS) with runners on base and .299/.437/.597 (1.034 OPS) with runners in scoring position this season.  

Ok, that's enough nice things about Tork.  Got to keep the RV going.  ;-)

I don’t know where this idea that Tork is below average defensively as a 1B comes from. He has a great arm and is excellent at catching poor throws in the dirt. He is fine at catching foul flies. It must be based only on range, which is the least important aspect of playing 1B in my opinion.

Or not. As Michael noted a few days ago:

Yah, but Tork is great with a runner only on third!   In 81 PA, he's hitting .292/.420./.477.
And he's almost as great with first-and-third:    in 76 PA, he's hitting .311/.382/.475.

It seem Tork has an amazing innate clutch capability to hit with a runner at third, but it totally vanishes when there is *also* a runner at second!  

Or maybe these are small sample sizes :-)
