While many Tigers stayed home to play against the Blue Jays in Lakeland, others went to Clearwater to take on the Phillies. Like the Tigers, the Phillies entered this gaame without a win in Spring Training. Unlike the Tigers, the Phillies got their first win in this gaame. They beat the Tigers 5-3.
In the bottom of the third, Edmundo Sosa hit a ground-rule double, and scored on a signle by Pedro Leon. Then, Kyle Schwarber walked, Bryce Harper walked to load the bases, and Alec Bohm hit an infield single to drive in Mr. Leon.
In the top of the fourth, Gleyber Torres walked, went to second on a single by Kerry Carpenter, and scored on a single by Javy Baez.
In the bottom of the fourth, Otto Kemp hit a solo home run for the Phillies.
Zach McKinstry led off the top of the fifth with a single, went to third base on a single by Tomas Nido, and scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the fifth, J.T. Realmuto walked, and scored on a double by Bryce Harper. Mr. Harper scored on a single by Alec Hohm.
Brett Callahan hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth, to finish the scoring.
26-year-old Ty Madden pitched two perfect innings to start the game, with one strikeout.
32-year-old Scott Effross, who pitched a bit for the Yankees last year (with an 8.44 E.R.A.), gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning.
Trevin Michael got the last out of the third inning.
28-year-old Konnor Pilkington, a lefty who pitched for the Nationalas last year, gave up a solo home run to Otto Kemp. It was the only hit he allowed in 1 1/3 innings of work.
28-year-old righty Jack Little gave up two runs on two hits and a walk in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out one.
33-year-old Tanner Rainey, who began last year with the Pirates, pitched a perfect inning in the seventh.
35-year-old Burch Smith gave up on hit, no walks, and no runs in the eighth. He struck out two.
