CF Max Clark was 3-4 with 3 singles, a walk and a stolen base for Toledo tonight.  His OPS is now .772 and is .979 since July 1.
The lefty-hitting Clark has a .777 OPS vs. lefties and .771 vs. righties.  Let's hope Hinch doesn't platoon Clark when he gets called up.

Ron Howard as narrator: "But A.J. Hinch did indeed platoon Max Clark when the Tigers called him up."

Or "Hewas traded as part of a package for Mason Miller."

I wonder if not platooning Greene might be a hopeful sign as to how Clark will be used.

Is Clark the long term answer in CF?

Pretty sure the Tigers envision Clark as their future everyday CF.   He might get promoted to Detroit in August, although there's talk that the Tigers might not call him up this season due to the uncertainty of the CBA negotiations.
We'll see.

I've read some comparisons between Clark and Pete Crowe-Armstrong.  That would be nice if Clark is similar to PCA.  We'd take that.  (Although I think Clark is a more disciplined hitter than PCA and might have less power potential).

The Tigers would trade for Miller and he'd immediately need Tommy John surgery.

The International League OPS is .765 this year, so Clark is basically an average AAA hitter this season.  A bit of a disappointment after his fast start.  Clark is still very young with loads of ceiling.  I’d like to see him really master AAA pitching before they bring him up - both for long-term team control and for his development.

He’s showing improvement in the past month.  Yes, I know it’s a smaller sample-size, but at least he’s trending in the right direction.
Clark’s peripherals and advanced metrics are pretty encouraging as well.  He’s elevating the ball better lately. He has a very low chase rate. He’s a very disciplined hitter.  If he stays hot into mid-August I wouldn’t mind if they call him up.  But there might be service time reasons for not calling him up this season.

I'm pretty sure he'll be the Tigers' starting CF next year (if we have a season).

Funny that Jace Jung has a higher OPS (.791) in AAA than Clark but Jung is almost an afterthought now. (Yes, I know Jung is 25 and Clark is 21).

I hope the Tigers trade Jung for his sake.  He's blocked in Detroit by Keith, McGonigle, Tork and Lee and he's probably behind Max Anderson as well.  He's not much of a prospect anymore, but he needs to go to another organization to have any chance for a MLB career.

I could see Jung being a throw-in for a deadline trade.

Jace Jung is a great example of the capriciousness of pro ball.  If you think about it, he’s almost the same player as Colt Keith.  But Colt is set for life and Jace can’t get a break.

Also perhaps something to keep in mind when people are hoping for a Skubal trade at the deadline. Both Jung and Keith were among the top 100 prospects in MLB not too long ago. There’s just no guarantee even when you acquire prospects that they’re going to be a surefire part of a winning core.

That’s why I’ve come to the hope that the Tigers just go for it this season and keep Skubal. I’m just not convinced they’ll get game changer players for a 2-month rental at this point (even though it is Skubal) so let’s try and take advantage of a weak American League this season instead!

This is what I was saying the other day. The prospect rankings are meaningless. Trading a top player for prospects rarely, if ever, yields equivalent value. It would be like trading $100 for 3 $5 lottery tickets. Maybe you get lucky but the odds are low.

The prospect *rankings* are meaningless, but that's because they aren't conducted as a serious exercise.  They are a propaganda tool.  Why would any team give out their honest evaluations publicly?  There are plenty of future major leaguers in the minors today, and lots of value available to the teams that can identify them.  But the rankings won't help.

BTW, the MLB/MiLB just updated their "official" top 30 prospect rankings for each team.  It's a joke.

Even with the very best evaluations I think it is still largely a crapshoot. Think about how many prospects hit a ceiling at AAA. It is just not easy to predict MLB success.

> It is just not easy to predict MLB success.

100% true.

I do think I've noticed a sea change in the philosophy, though.  It used to be the sentiment was "that guy had potential but never made it; this other guy is doing great,"  as if it was all on the player.  Now people are talking more about the team's responsibility, and capability, to help.  When a guy gets stuck, are they giving him random advice "from experience", or are they a video-and-data-driven organization which can actually tell him what to do differently.  In the latter kind of world, player development becomes a competitive advantage.
