Welcome to Metro Detroit, Peter.
You may have already picked up on this, but the cycling conditions vary greatly within the region. This is true even in Dearborn where the east side is better than the west. Here's an old article I'd written about this.
I would also recommend you share your experience with Dave Norwood (dnor...@ci.dearborn.mi.us) from the city of Dearborn.

I just moved to Dearborn from the Northeast, and wow, this place is quite a bit less ideal for biking. I am commuting 8 miles per day round trip to Allen Park and get honked at just about every day for apparently no reason. I've had one close call on the other side of Michigan Ave where someone in a fancy black Cadillac did not move over at all to pass. Because of this, I've started riding on a mix of street and sidewalk to avoid getting hit, since apparently riding on the sidewalk is legal here, unlike my previous home. Any other tips I should know?
I've started a document up on GitHub if anyone wants to contribute: https://github.com/petebachant/SE-Michigan-cyclist-survival-guide
