I have never made the trek but would like to give it a try. I need to be to work by 730 so I would have to leave fairly early. Does anyone have a route suggestion or other pointers?

That's a looonnnggg ride for a morning commute. Make sure you've got lights, a water bottle, patch kit, and maybe an extra tube.

I haven't ridden too much on the west side. Try asking Todd at M-Bike.

I don't have any thoughts on that route. I used to commute through Farmington Hills but I rarely did that since it felt like a death wish. I don't feel comfortable routing anyone through there.

Once in Detroit, you can take Grand River. That's a straight shot.

Seems your best bet would be to make your way down Middlebelt to Grand River and take that down all the way.

Yeah, Middlebelt to Grand River works. I did that once last year, from Maple to New Center. You can use Shiawassee and Beech Daly to avoid a couple of miles of Grand River with higher speed limits.

I just started riding from Farmington Hills to Downtown last Friday and again on Tuesday. I ride just over 20 miles straight down Grand River. I start work at 8:30am, but don't mind starting a little early to have some company. If you are still looking to do this, let me know.

I have rode back once, but not in evening. I take the Smart Bus' Park and Ride #805 bus back home instead of riding the bike.

The morning ride is a breeze with few cars and fewer pedestrians that early in the morning. The Friday ride (1st time) was 1 hr 26 mins. Tuesday's ride was 1 hr 15 mins. Friday I was off from work and I started the trip back without much of a break. It took 1 hr 46 mins to return with the wind in my face and some fatigue from the inbound trip.

I am not sure of the conditions (temperature, more cars, more people, etc) in the late afternoon and am not ready to think about a return bike ride (at least not by myself).

I haven't decided how often I will ride Downtown each week, but I am thinking at least twice.

Let me know.

So I have been doing it twice a week (Wed & Fri).
It is much colder now than it had been, but I have dress appropriately.
Lost one of my gloves,  so I have to get a new pair before tmorrow's ride.
I have two panniers (one for bike stuff and work stuff and the second one for change of clothes and toiletries)
If I didn't have access to a private restroom (unisex), I would not be able to clean up properly.

I have been doing this route, but I start a little further west. I start super early, so traffic is not bad, except when jockeying around a DDOT bus.  I ride down middlebelt to shiawassee and take that to beech, whereby I head south and take G.R. the whole way in ... I need to shower when I get in, so you might have to factor that into your plans.  I ride fat tires on my 700c's :50MM!  Thank goodness!!  MI roads, as we all know, are terrible.
