I know about the plans of the developers (not in the near future, however) to change the mechanics of building in the game.
However, there is one thing that needs to be added to the vanilla version as quickly as possible. Yes, it's a 5 digit lock.
And it should be in the vanilla version of the game. We don't want to use mods or we can't if we are console players.
A 4-digit lock is not a reliable defense for your base.
Players very often use programs, macros and scripts to crack these 4 digit lock. However, they can be afk while the script does it for them.. It takes about 1-2 hours for 1 code lock.
Players now crack 4 digit lock instead of destroying the building. This is a real problem.
All my arguments are based on the experience of administering a vanilla server with 70 people full online every day on PC. Over the past 2 years I've noticed that a 4 digit padlock is not enough in vanilla building.
I hope I will be heard.

As far as locks go, I would agree. 4 dials are pointless. Staff has said codelocks are not possible because of "reasons" but have only cited lore related reasons. Which is hilarious. The reality is that we need something like Codelocks because the game is not stopping the cheating that is currently breaking the mechanic on official servers. Plus it's a huge quality of life improvement, in my opinion.

Indeed. The vanilla game could use a codelock. I know on every server I admin, the codelock mod is essential, even use it for a bit of storage as well. But I also have a specific raidsaw that can be found very rarely on our servers that you can use to cut a lock. It's all about balance.

Hi , me and my group had been playing on a server for a few weeks , we have built a very large base but we keept getting raided because is too easy to open a lock , you just have to guess ther first 2 numbers , the last one open as soon you cycle the correct number.
Takes only a few minutes to open a gate and we have 2 , 3 numbers only is way too easy plus the issue with the last one
Is this getting addressed ? because right now you cant have your shit safe unless you build like 10 or more gates.
Sorry for my english , thanks a lot

I think you'll find they're breaking in by using Hacksaws.

The reason I know this is simple maths.

a 3 combination lock contains 1000 possible permutations. That's 999 chances to get it wrong.
Even if you discount the last digit, you still have to get the first 2 correct. 2 digits is 100 permutations, and any of these might be wrong... And even if you do get it right, you still won't know until you get the 3rd digit correct... Which takes you back to 3 digits and 1000 permutations.

To take this one step further... To cycle a combination lock ingame by one digit takes about 3 seconds for each number. In order to cycle the combination lock to the correct number could therefore theoretically take 50 minutes. (1000 x 3 /60) And you're saying you have 2 locks. So that's theoretically 1:40 minutes of combination hunting. I'll admit that unless your combination code is 999 and they start at 000, it's going to take them less time. But the point is it takes a LOT less time to just cut through it with a hacksaw. (2 minutes or something isn't it?)

They're not breaking the combination. They're breaking the lock.

No , i know for sure they are finding the numbers , we tested it on other people bases . The server uses a mod so you cant break buildings from outside .
Someone changed our owns locks and we had to guess the numbers . it only took us 30 minutes less or more to open both gates .
Let me explaing , you select a number between 100 and for the last number you just hold the button (01holdbutton , 02holdbutton and so on) we can confirm is really really easy

Agree, would like to see better security measures. Not to mention people can just take off netting, and also easily take down wire from the outside with pliers. The combo locks are ridiculous and clunky to work with. Would like to see at least a 5 number combo, or a key perhaps, locked to that player and lock. And a few hacksaws will get you in a double gate as well. Just too easy.

The issue is, trying to make it too much like real life when it just can't be. In real life, you are always around. In the real world, we have to work, family, sleep, etc.. Would be nice to see tents/gates/locks, be bound to a player I.D.. That way they can't be broken in to. Or at least make it much harder to break in to bases and such.

why should it be harder? you realize that the combination lock in game is a simple bike lock right? in real life you would bike to work lock your bike to a sign or bike rack and head in for a minimum 2 hrs or so before going on break. if i sat and put my mind to it (in high school days we broke many a lock) i could have ur bike in a half hour or so and be on my way (and im not even practiced at it).

If you want a game where you can build and store things and have everything be completely safe why not play something like the sims instead. or maybe build a smaller base in a harder to find location. not trying to be a dick but seriously if they make bases take 3 hrs to break into then they would be making it crazy unrealistic and last i checked the game is supposed to be a real life survival simulator.....

This Instructable will teach you how to crack the code of any combination lock in a matter of seconds! This skill is only to be used legally and I am not responsible for anything other than teaching you how to unlock your own combination locks that you may have forgotten the code to.

A combination lock (using a bike lock as an example as shown in the pictures above) has three or more dials with a keyhole through the centre of them. When correct code (in this case 9-2-4) is entered the keyholes of all the dials on the lock become aligned and toothed pin (second picture) can be inserted. When the dials are moved or jumbled, the keyholes become dis-aligned and the toothed pin cannot be removed and is therefore locked in place.

When picking/cracking a combination lock a length of rope can be used to create a makeshift handle to give you a better grip of the lock. A good grip is necessary because in order to crack the lock you will need to apply a strong and even upwards force on the shackle throughout the entire procedure and this can be difficult to obtain with just bare hands. Being able to apply strong even force on the shackle is vital in order to put a greater amount of friction on the locks dials so that when a dial is turned to the correct number it will result in a resounding 'click' and a slight upward movement of the shackle. When you feel the shackle move upwards slightly and release a 'click' you can move on to the next dial and repeat the procedure until all the dials on the lock have been completed and the lock has been cracked. If the lock is locked onto a solid object such as a gate or a door then a length of rope most likely won't be necessary as having it locked onto something gives you more control and grip thus meaning you will be able to complete the whole procedure with just your bare hands.

First of all you will have to thread your length of rope through the loop on the lock and fold it in half around the shackle as shown in the first photo. This will become your makeshift handle that will give you a sturdier and stronger grip of the lock to make the procedure easier. Next clasp the rope tightly in your hands and push down on the top of the lock as hard as you can using your thumb finger and make sure to keep exerting the same amount of force on the lock throughout the whole procedure. While still keeping even pressure on the lock you now need to rotate each of the dials slightly in each direction. You will quickly find the dial that is the hardest to rotate which is the dial you will begin with (in my case it was 'C').

Start to gradually rotate the dial that is the until you hear a resounding 'click' and feel the shackle move upwards slightly. Check the dial and make a note of the number that it 'clicked' on then continue to gradually rotate that same dial to double-check (in my case dial 'C' was the hardest to rotate and it 'clicked' on '7'). If it continues to make a 'click' sound on the same number every rotation then you have successfully figured out the first digit of the code and you can now move onto figuring out the next dial. Once again rotate each of the remaining dials to find which is the hardest to rotate (in my case it was dial 'B'). Repeat the same process you used on the first dial until you have figured out the second digit of your code (in my case it was '1'). If you have a three digit combination lock like what I have demonstrated with, you should now only have one more dial to figure out. All you will need to do now is keep constant pressure on the lock and slowly twist the remaining dial in a full rotation. As you rotate the dial the last remaining digit needed for the code will match up with the other two you had previously figured out and the shackle should open.

Now just learn to use this technique on everyone's garden sheds without being spotted or caught and you'll have free access to every tool you could ever wish for (boat lockers and storage sheds are also a good way to pick up a quick buck). Cheers!

In the video you can see me putting in the code, picking up the code lock in my hands . The sound appears at 00:07 . Then I put the lock in my inventory, and the sound appears again around 00:54 . It will go on until you apply the lock to the gate again.
