I've owned a very useful flatbed scanner for almost 10 years now.
When I upgraded to Windows 10, the scanner was no longer compatible with it.
But, I kept an old computer around the house with XP on it so I could use the scanner.
I'm getting rid of that old computer soon but I don't want to part with my flatbed scanner as replacing it would be too expensive; around $200.

You could try the silverfast 6.6 scan suite.. they support a lot of older scanners (they mention a canoscan 600 but not your exact model) But there is a demo so maybe a case of just giving it a go.

I will try the WinXP in VM environment and see. After that I may give up and retire this ol' girl scanner. :)
EDIT: Checked out making a VM, it's too much hassle for me. Time for a new scanner I guess, or I can use the local libraries for $1. :) ahahh

Try VueScan from Hamrick Software (www.hamrick.com). They support lots of older scanners. They have a trial version you can install and test. I use it for an old HP Scanner that otherwise wouldn't work with Win 10.

The Canoscan D646U is incompatible with Win 10, this Canoscan and many versions all the way to N676U lack drivers for modern OS. I usually suggest Canoscan users contact Canon for an offer of trade-in credit or some deal to upgrade.

If you want to scan in a hurry, you'll need to shell out for a business scanner.
If you want to scan slides and negatives, you'll need to shell out for a transmission photo scanner.
If you don't need either, an MFP is most likely the most economical. They also tend to be flat bed scanners with document feeder, best of both worlds. You won't get the highest resolution for photos, but more than enough for doubling the size of a postcard print. You won't get the fastest scan times, but unless you're scanning all day, it's not likely to matter.

The Epson 4740 would be ok, but I don't think it gives you any better scanner than the 37?? for $100 less. (last two digits tend to differentiate single/double paper tray)
My favourite would be the 7710 which gives you A3 for less than the price of the 4740

Most of the Epson MFPs will do a duplex scan from the ADF by flipping the page and scanning both sides sequentially. If the page is ripped or really badly creased this is a problem, but my wife has scanned classes worth of school assignments successfully.

Since Windows 95 scanner software generally has not had specific support to directly access scanners, but relied on a TWAIN device driver. So if one program can't access the scanner, it's most unlikely different software will be any different.
The differences between programs will be what features of the scanner the software can utilise.

I searched for other solutions for some months with no success until I gave in and purchased ViewScan (It took me some time to decide to pay $110 for ViewScan for an old scanner when a new scanner could be purchased for not much more).

I tried contacting Canon here in Australia via their online contact form. It requires a 'paid for/ISP' email, and I haven't had one of those for about a decade... I might try contacting them by phone or some other way.

I use the free VMWare Player with XP to run a couple of old programs that won't work on anything 64 bit and it works fine.
Do note if your mobo/cpu has virtualisation built in this must be turned on in the BIOS for programmes like VMWare player to run (called SVM in my Asus mobo bios).
Also used an unlocker to run osx in the VM just for fun.

I have same problem with a very old Canon PIXMA MFP which is not supported on Win 10. I keep merely out of stubborn, refusal to "e-waste" out of my life, but I has been replaced with something that cost $200 and actually does a better, faster job.

Here's a nice 1200dpi image taken with the scanner on the virtual machine of one of my favorite books; Bostrom's Global Catastrophic Risks (Image is of the plague.)

(TinyPic had to be used because of upload limit on other sites.)
