It also features a cover of "What a Wonderful World," because clearly the film is trying to tap into the nostalgia of a more innocent time, but it was a slower minor-key version with a more sinister backing track, because while Dr. Dolittle makes us think of the wonders and joys of our childhood, his is a world fraught with dangers and we should never completely relax.
Just like the "Alice in Wonderland" movies of the past decade tried to play up Johnny Depp's quirky Mad Hatter as this delightfully unpredictable scamp, RDJ is turning in a very quirky performance as the world's most famous veterinarian (who talks to animals)... he even has the wild hair.
Like the books it's inspired by, "Dolittle" takes the titular doctor on wild adventures around the world with his animals friends, and a few children as well. And his world is one filled with danger, excitement, incredibly bright colors and a wide array of animal friends (and a few enemies).
And while we're not completely sold yet on Downey's British accent, such as it is, he appears to bring just the right amount of charm and wonder to the role. It's a huge departure, however, from his Marvel work as he appears to be much more earnest and sincere than the sarcastic Tony Stark. Or maybe the trailer just leaves all of that out.
This first look at his adventures is a visual treat for the eyes, with stunning visuals throughout and plenty of excitement. Not to mention, our technology for talking animals is at such a point these days that the film's creators were able to create fully-realized animals from apes to big cats, exotic birds, giraffes and so many more.
Robert Downey, Jr. stars alongside Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Jim Broadbent and more; with voice work by the likes of John Cena, Marion Cotillard, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Tom Holland, Rami Malek, Kumail Nanjiani, Craig Robinson, Octavia Spencer and Emma Thompson. The film is set to hit theaters on January 17, 2020.

In his first role post-Avengers: Endgame, Robert Downey Jr. has the ability to talk to animals as the famous Doctor John Dolittle. After much buzz around Universal's adaptation of the Hugh Lofting-created character, we now have the first trailer for Dolittle, a fantasy adventure film from director and co-writer Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Gold).
Originally titled "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle," the project follows the eponymous doctor as he hermits himself away after the death of his wife. He eventually hits the high seas in search of a cure for the young queen (Jessie Buckley), who has fallen gravely ill. Aiding John on his quest for a mythical island is his apprentice (Harry Collett) and a menagerie of animals voiced by major A-listers like Tom Holland (Jip, a dog), John Cena (Yoshi, a polar bear), Marion Cotillard (Toto, a fox), Octavia Spencer (Dab-Dab, a duck), and so many others.
While it was Rex Harrison who first brought John Dolittle to the movies in 1967, modern audiences probably associate the role with Eddie Murphy. Between 1998 and 2001, the comedian portrayed the animal-whispering maven in two films that took place in modern-day America. Based on the trailer above, it looks like Gaghan is going for a more faithful translation of Lofting's books, which were set in Victorian England.
In April of this year, we reported that TMNT vet Jonathan Liebesman was brought onto the project for reshoots. As sources told The Hollywood Reporter at the time, "Gaghan needed help with the animal component of it all." Even before that, the production brought on Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie) "to do an overhaul of the story."
Mayo replaces Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper, who, according to the show's producers, needed to withdraw because of potential future activity of his current show, Being Alive. (The Stephen Sondheim revue that bowed in Connecticut in late August goes live again in October at Philadelphia Theatre Company.)
Also new to the Starfighter cast is Nora Blackall as Maggie, the young love interest of the show's hero, Alex. Blackall appeared in The Sound of Music with Richard Chamberlain, in Goodspeed Musicals' A Little Night Music and is a featured singer on the recording "Simple Gifts: Carols From the Abbey."
Don Mayo will play Otis Wright, the mountain-town resident who narrates the tale. He appeared on Broadway in Man of La Mancha, On the Town, The Scarlet Pimpernel and in Madison Square Garden's A Christmas Carol and The Wizard of Oz.
Rising actor Danny Binstock and veterans Joe Kolinski, Janet Carroll and Adinah Alexander are among the previously announced performers who'll reach for the heavens in the NYMF production of The Last Starfighter, the "romantic musical sci-fi fantasy" based on the screenplay of the same name.
The new staging Sept. 28-Oct. 7 at The Theater at St. Clements in Manhattan will be directed by Elizabeth Lucas and choreographed by David Eggers (dance captain of Broadway's Curtains). The musical has music and lyrics by Skip Kennon (Herringbone, Time and Again) and book by Fred Landau, drawing on the screenplay by Jonathan Betuel.
The NYMF run will feature young actor Binstock (seen in North Shore's High School Musical, Shakespeare Theatre's Titus Andronicus in DC) as the teen-age California video game wizard, Alex Rogan, who is enlisted by Kolinski (Titanic, Les Miz, A Christmas Carol), as alien Centauri, the role played by Robert Preston in the 1984 film. Alex is such a high scorer on the video game in the trailer park he helps manage that he's recruited by Centauri for space duty.
Andrea Jess Berkey is production stage manager. The creative team also includes Herrick Goldman (lighting design), Keith Truax (tech director), Mark Richard Caswell (costume design) and Michael Cassara Casting (casting). Karen Marshall is production assistant.
The Last Starfighter played an Off-Broadway showcase production in 2004, produced by The Storm Theatre. The show broke the troupe's weekly attendance and weekly box-office records. An original cast recording is on the Kritzerland label.
