Those are the broad strokes of the narrative, but suffice it to say there is a lot to chew on in this 100+ hour epic, and perhaps the most impressive thing about Persona 5 Royal is how effectively it manages to handle pacing. Sure, the game could be 20 hours shorter if it trimmed back the dialogue, but it makes full use of its runtime to build out an incredibly varied cast of three-dimensional characters that interact with a plot that continuously raises the stakes.

The depth of the script is part of the appeal, as conversations feel natural and the developing relationships between all the Phantom Thieves feel like they progress at a realistic and logical pace. Third-act plot twists and important developments all feel like they were sufficiently set up in the preceding chapters, while the finale ties a satisfying bow over the whole experience. This is not the kind of JRPG that feels contrived or increasingly out of hand as it progresses; though it can feel a tad plodding if you binge the whole thing end to end (as we had to for review), this is the rare sort of game that we feel absolutely justifies its length.

We feel special mention also needs to be made regarding the voice acting, which is excellent across the board. Both the English and Japanese casts do a stellar job of breathing life and emotion into the diverse cast on offer here, and the sheer volume of dialogue that had to be recorded just for the main story beats alone is nothing short of commendable.

Mitch has been a fan of Nintendo ever since he got his start on the GBA in 2005. When he's not busy playing games or writing, you can find him down at his local MMA training facility learning how to punish the unrighteous.

Haven't played it before and look forward to checking it out considering how much everyone raves about it. Super expensive here in Australia for whatever reason (I dunno about other regions) but at least there were some good deals for the physical version so I'll be getting it at launch and playing it probably sooner rather than later.

Despite the unbalanced combat, P5R is still one of the best games Atlus has ever made. I love how they re-integrated negotiations and guns back into the series. The music is pure brilliance. The dungeons are actually good in this game, being hand designed this go around. The aesthetics are on point. And while I had some issues with the original ending, the new ending obtained by unlocking access to the third semester is fantastic, and that entire expansion has some of the best storytelling in the entire franchise.

@IronMan30 It's still something that needs highlighting regardless of how obvious it might be. Considering it's hardly the most graphically intensive game, some folks may have expected more parity, and I wouldn't blame them.

Never played this, but have heard many great things about it. Unfortunately, my big game purchase of the month went to NMS (which I am having an absolute blast with), so I will probably GamePass this one, at least for now. Its great to hear that the Switch port is so well done, though! So much gaming goodness on Switch this month (and next) is pretty crazy, but oh so good!

As a die-hard fan of the previous games in the series, I'm so glad today is finally here. Unfortunately I don't have money to buy. I will be content with watching the gameplay videos. Please have fun for me too, those who play.

I've never played any Persona game and I've been patiently waiting for a Swtich version of this one to arrive. I have other consoles as well, but I've been waiting simply to support Nintendo's platform so I can't wait to finally give this one a shot. And then maybe go back and play older games in the series.

The Switch port I most wanted is finally here, but too late for me. Caved in last year and got the Platinum on PS4, and if I were to replay it, I'd probably opt for PC cuz Steam Deck. So glad it's finally available for every system now, though. Hands down my favourite JRPG.

What a glorious weekend to be an RPG fan. And a worthy reward to those who thought we'd "never see it coming (to Switch)" despite our outcry for it. May this weeklong wait for launch day be "too fast for eyes".

I am probably going to get slammed for this because it would be deemed unconstructive, but; I think it's because of all the exposure, I am not as excited for Persona 5 as I am for 4 & 3. Since I don't recall them to be as lauded over, but seeing similar stuff out of them.

@Juanblue85 I'm probably going blind, it's my preferred way. I played P3P and P4 and received a few spoilers along the years but there is a lot I don't know and I hope to be surprised.
I usually reserve a guide for a second playthrough if I have the time to complete the Compendium

@Paraka P3 and P4 have an enormous crowd that grew up from a cult following. P5's coverage is the culmination of many people learning to love the series in the past decade and the anticipation boom when the game was first announced. I expect the same to happen if/when they announce P6

@turntSNACO Granted it does bare noting that the divergence point is well before the divergence actually comes into place. The last chance you have to select one ending or another is like a boss fight and two entire dungeons before the plot's actually changed by it, so it's not really terribly practical to save and then replay it both ways, at least on a non-New Game Plus run.

I played it on playstation now on PC, but it ran terribly, and didn't get the chance to come that far, so I'm very grateful that it comes out on Switch. I already purchased it on eShop, so now it's just a matter of time (not that Nier won't have me occupied until then anyway)

@Koffyman It's kind of an odd game to market because there's a bit of duality between the characters and the environments. All of the actiony stuff you show off in trailers is in the Palaces and Mementos, which are dark and gloomy and deal with a lot of personal issues and the like, and the main characters all have various hang-ups and traumas in their lives.

At the same time though, the day-to-day stuff is usually bright and cheery in its presentation (except on rainy days I guess), and while a ton of people still have a lot of baggage at the end of the day the game is also usually very upbeat and goofy and optimistic.

I love the idea of an epic JRPG, but I struggle to finish 13 hour games these days, so a 130+ hour game is never going to happen. It's especially an issue with RPGs as I end up having gaps in my playthroughs and then can never remember what I was supposed to be doing! Glad they put the effort in on all platforms though.

@Paraka that's a very fair assessment. I've been discouraged of playing games I really wanted to play by receiving too much info that it spoiled the fun for me. Repeatedly.
These days I avoid reading too much about games I'm already sure I want to play, like the next Zelda

The wait is almost over. It took a while to get the port, but Persona 5 can finally be played portably as it should be. This will be my first playthrough and I know I'll enjoy the heck out of this game.

Persona 5 base game on PS4 was my first and only foray into the series and it was an unquestionable joyous pleasure. As it seems is the case with a lot of other Atlus offerings the game is split between two genres, this time- JRPG & Life Sim. Also the case with many Atlus games, Persona 5 just oozes endless style, flare, polish and pizazz. The visuals, music & content are all phenomenal.

My only small issues were really the amount on missable content due to the calendar and limited time for events as well as some unnecessarily repetitive & long dialogue and/or conversations about obvious story beats (even though it's well acted)- as I often just found myself wanting to get back to playing more. However, nevertheless and needless to say I loved it. Definitely one of, if not the, best of modern JRPG's and deserving of the perfect score imo.

I'm definitely more excited for one the entries coming out in January myself (ALL RIDE THE P4 GOLDEN HYPE TRAIN BABY) but to see such a stellar conversion after people have begged for it to come over for SO LONG makes me a very happy chappy indeed. Will definitely grab this at some point down the line!

I played Persona 5 on the PS4 when it first came out and have been waiting for this exact day to finally play P5R. The Switch was the only way I was ever going to get back into this monster of a game.

@Lizuka You have an extra month to max [redacted] compared to the others, so technically one dungeon. It would be annoying to immediately replay the last hours for the other ending, but some might prefer it to replaying the entire game.

It took too long for a port so I long lost interest in this game and franchise even, but I'm glad that the people's wishes were finally answered.
But to all the port beggers I hope they put their money where their mouth is and actually buy the game.

I played the original P5 on PS4 but after that I decided I was done playing long RPGs on a TV so I passed on P5R. I was very excited for the switch port announcement but I was waiting to pick this up until I saw some reviews so I knew it was a good port. Enough said I preordered this today.

@Tobiaku I looked it up after you mentioned it. Are you against Royal because you felt the scenes were important and not having them has hurt the game or is of more that it's as a principle against perceived censorship?

Nintendo fans, you're in for a treat! I'm currently back on the Vita revisiting Persona 4 and the maturity of the themes visited by the whole Persona series is quite staggering compared to other games of this or any other genre.

People like to label gratuitous titles like GTA as 'mature' but a game where you have to delve into the mind of a confused teenager to help him come to terms with his sexuality is a lot more grown-up, plot wise.

@Williamfuchs420
You can play through it but there's no real reason to do so as you're skipping out on the best section of the game. You can play Royal and understand strikers you can play vanilla and understand strikes. Royal doesn't remove it just adds to it
