AL-MAEENA There's a crisis brewing in the island and it does not bode well for the people of Sri Lanka. It seems that lessons that should have been learned following a civil war that lasted for more than 30 years and ended some three years ago, are being quickly forgotten. It all started on April 20 when the chief prelate of the Buddhist temple headed a crowd of Sinhala-Buddhists to the mosque in Dambulla, a city located about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital city of Colombo chanting slogans and demanding its destruction. The reason? Its presence in the area violated the sanctity of the Buddhists. The militants then proceeded to barge into the mosque, with some urinating on the mosque walls, while others took to lifting their robes and exposing themselves to the preacher's podium in an attempt at mockery. Compounding the crisis was a statement by the Sri Lankan Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne justifying the demands of the militants, an obvious attempt to play party politics with the ruling majority and giving credence to their claim that this mosque was located in an area sacred to them and thus it had to go. Muslim leaders were quick to react in dismissing these claims. They pointed out that this mosque has been standing for more than six decades on legally purchased land. According to Asad Sally, chairman of the Islamic Solidarity Front (ISF) and former deputy mayor of Colombo, "It is misleading to say that the mosque was in existence for two years as it has been there for more than 65 years. We have all the documents to prove that it is a legally constructed mosque under the Waqf Act. Therefore the statement by the Prime Minister claiming that the unauthorized construction of the mosque has been stopped is totally false. "The land on which the mosque was located was bought by a Muslim lady in Jaffna from Englishmen. From that time, this mosque has been in existence. Later the adjacent land too was bought by mosque authorities in 1995. This statement by the prime minister is misleading Buddhists in the country. The prime minister should not make such irresponsible statements as the Waqf Board comes under the prime minister and he is contradicting his own statement." The Tamil minority who had previously undergone suffering and discrimination for over 30 years today remain in silence. In hushed tones they can only agree that this is yet another example of Sinhala chauvinism strangling the religious, cultural and social sensitivities of the minorities on the island. They charge that Champika Ranawaka, current minister and a member of the extreme Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) political party, is the driving force behind moves to construct Buddhist temples in Tamil and Muslim areas. As a former minister of environment, he has been illegitimately using his political influence to seize land for the purpose of erecting Sinhalese religious temples and monuments. One prominent Sri Lankan noted: "The government has nurtured a viper and encouraged racial extremists in its bosom that it is unable to control. It is a deeper phenomenon that is more deadly; a certain version of Sinhala-Buddhist ideology that has impregnated society at large. The consciousness that drove forward the war also cemented a pre-existing faith that Sri Lanka is the land of the Sinhalese and the pristine home of Buddhism; other races and faiths must recognize that they live in a borrowed place on sufferance of good behavior. The politicization of Buddhism as the state religion, the constitutional entrenchment of Sinhala, and the ethnic monopolization of state and the armed forces, has shaped the political structure of the country." It is indeed a worrisome thought for not just Sri Lankan Muslims but the Tamil minority as well if such ideologies manifest themselves into reality. The Prime Minister's proposed solution of relocating the mosque was his way of solving the problem without permitting it to escalate. But the manner in which this proposal was made without consultation with the Muslim leadership of the area has hardened Muslim sentiment against the proposed relocation. The government will be having a serious problem on its hands as the largest political parties representing the Muslim community are an important part of the government coalition. The incident has caused a deep sense of hurt and insecurity in the minds of the Muslim community. The government cannot avoid the primary responsibility for the incident that led to the desecration of the mosque. The tension had evidently been building up over a period of time and the failure of the government's early warning systems shows a lacuna that its present strategy of beefing up the military power of the government will not address. There are two divergent positions to be reconciled. One is the position of the Muslim community who affirm that the mosque has been in existence for over sixty years and been a place of worship without disturbance. On the other hand, the temple authorities have taken the position that government laws entitle them to claim the land as part of the traditional temple property. As religion is at the centre of the dispute, goodwill, sensitivity and even-handedness will be necessary attributes of those tasked with engaging in conflict resolution. RULE OF LAW It has been pointed out that at least three offences under the Penal Code occurred and were captured on television. These were unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation and criminal trespass. There was a mob, stone throwing and vandalisation of the mosque. In addition there was the violation of the constitutional right to freedom to practice one's religion. What was especially disturbing was that these incidents took place in the presence of the police who were there in strength, but no action was taken by them to ensure law and order. This can be taken as a sign of some level of governmental complicity in what transpired. In other recent instances of mob action, such as at the protest by fishermen over fuel price hikes and by free trade zone workers over their pension rights the police have acted decisively. In recent times there have been many reports of attacks on religious minorities including church burning and controversy over unethical conversions. The primary source of violent social behavior that has manifested itself in acts of religious violence is the absence of due emphasis to the Rule of Law. Maintaining law and order and civil administration is the prime duty of the government and state machinery. The breakdown of the Rule of Law within the country can lead to a situation where persecuted groups will feel justified in looking elsewhere for justice including the international community. Wherever and whenever there are disputes they need to be settled through negotiations or by recourse to the law in competent courts in the country and the use of force cannot be tolerated. This is a point that has also been stressed by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission appointed by the Government in the aftermath of the country's three decade long internal war when it said that the Rule of Law and not the rule of men should prevail. It is unacceptable that protests can emerge at anytime and anywhere with people being chased away, displaced and even abducted and murdered. In particular there is a need for an end to the culture of impunity in which those who wield power act as if they are in charge of personal fiefdoms, whether at the national or local levels. NARROW NATIONALISM While it is appalling that some leading politicians from extremist parties have justified the forcible removal of the mosque in these circumstances there is reason to be gratified that religious leaders of both the Buddhist and Muslim communities have appealed for discussions and a mutually acceptable solution. The harmonious relations that exist between the people have continued. In virtually all parts of the country there are multi religious settlements where worship of different religions takes place in close proximity to each other in a peaceful environment. This is a heritage that Sri Lankans can be proud of and needs to be safeguarded. By and large, relations between the religious communities have been exceptionally harmonious in Sri Lanka. The festivals of one religious community are an occasion for them to share food, sweetmeats and goodwill with those of other religious communities. On the weekend following the Dambulla incident there was an inter-religious conference in Galle that I attended. This conference had been arranged several weeks ago, and the organizers had some apprehensions that the recent incident in Dambulla could make the conference a place of confrontation. Over a hundred participants were to attend and that was a sufficiently large number to be nervous about. But the fears of the organizers did not materialise. The relations between the clergy and laity of the different religions at the conference were warm and mutually accepting. Perhaps they reached out more towards each other because of the context in which they were meeting, and they were aware of the important role they were being called upon to play in maintain peace and harmony in the country. While at this inter-religious conference in Galle, my mind went back two decades to my time with the Sarvodaya Movement. In 1992 I accompanied its leader Dr A T Ariyaratne to Dambulla. This was to join in a peaceful meditation with the Ven. Inamaluwe Sumangala, the head priest of the Dambulla temple, to protest against the building of a luxury hotel on the banks of an ancient irrigation tank. Subsequently during the period of the ceasefire, in 2005, I went again to the Dambulla temple for a peace photography exhibition. This was an exhibition for which the Ven. Inamaluwe Sumangala gave his permission to hold in a large hall next to his temple. At that time he represented the liberal and universal values of Buddhism that sought peace through compassionate means and looked to the welfare of all. It would appear that the change that has taken place in more recent years represents the change in values that now dominate the country. The experience of peace making is that inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations need to be deliberately harnessed and nurtured. The positive outcome of the Galle conference did not happen by itself. The participating religious clergy and laity from multi religious backgrounds had met each other on previous occasions, through district level workshops and exposure visits where they travelled from their own districts to other districts and interacted with the people there. Civic leadership that shows positive results at the micro level is an inspiration that the government can take on at the macro level by shedding narrow nationalism. It is also important that the Dambulla incident be seen in its larger context, and not simply as a Muslim issue. It has implications for all communities, for Sri Lanka's international relations and reconciliation after war. Please accept the facts and don't live in a dream world. Common accept the truth that they are with you in every part of society and there no point barging top of your voice for no reasons because neither your thoughts or your opinion can be respected in a democracy. You and me and many and all of them given the rights to parliament and the constitution to decide things. Now its like few don't like UP and BIHARI to come to mumbai like shiv sena or mns , and they have been doing all the goonda giri against UP and BIHARIS in fact they have gone to the extent of beating them up and even killing few students and taxi wala n rickshaw wala but what happened did they stopped those migrations of UP and BIHARI to mumbai in fact the migration between 2010-2011 was increased from 30 percent to 45 percent.

Than you are talking about throwing the muslims out of country that too when you are living in a democratic india. I think you must be dreaming and living in a day world. Please be awaken and see the reality if u have eyes and if you are not blind and please stop spreading hate in the society and do something constructive than destructive. I have been seeing so many mails written by many intelligent hindu lovers and I do admire your sentiments and emotions and also respect the dedication that you guys have been showing towards the love hindu religion and even I love that but that does not mean that you create unrest full society with your fundamentalism.

If you really love hindu religion and really wanted to do something for hindus please create millions, billions job opportunities for unemployed hindu youths, please arrange accommodations for hindus who are sleeping on streets and footpath, please arrange food and water for billions of hindus who are not even getting the normal basic life.  Dreamers create the world. The world as we see is created by only minorities. Martin Luther King, Veer sarvarkar, Dr. Kesavram Hedgewar, Carl Marx and Sankaracharya were able to change the entire thought system and create a new world of thought, philosophy and activism. Democracy is the way of counting the heads of fools. Why should we follow the majority of crazy, terrorists, following a closed dogma called  Islam and criminal politicians? Is there any democracy in any Islamic countries? They blindly follow the foolish uttering of the pedophile, polygamist Mohamad. For Muslims, democracy, secularism, pluralism and vox populai are not consistent with the closed Political dogma called Islam. Do we have to follow the foolish sayings of the majority? What democracy do we have in Nagaland, Kerala, Tripura, West Bengal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and all Islamic countries? Do Hindus have any rights in Kashmir? Indian wealth has been looted out of India by Islamic warriors and Christian colonialists by centuries. Still India is able to sustain itself as a nation.
 
Democracy is imposed on unsuspecting people for centuries. For example British Christian colonialists want to impose Democracy in Hong Kong when they were forced to leave. The Chinese had the will to impose their form of government in Hong Kong. We have to remember when the British christian colonialists ruled Hong Kong for hundreds of years, there was no democracy. They imposed their will with an Iron Fist. What democracy British Christian colonialists imposed on India for centuries when they were looting our wealth. When they were forced to leave India, they imposed democracy to count the heads of fools and an anti Indian constitution was imposed with special privileges for Muslims and Christians. And it still continues. What special privileges Britain offers to Minorities in their own country. Hindus in India are acting like Zombies under the present constitution and prevailing democracy. This crazy system needs to be changed. And Hindus have to be active and assertive to preserve our culture, promote pluralism and practice liberty.

Muslims shout five times a day at their hate preaching  Mosques that there is no GOD.  In fact, Muslims don't believe in GOD, spirituality, secularism, pluralism, coexistence, religious tolerance or Democracy. Muslims shout everything is derived and sustained by Allah. In reality Allah is not GOD. Allah is worse than a DEVIL. Only a deviant Devil can pronounce such atrocious verses in the Unholy Koran.

The so called Arab Spring is really Al-Taquiea in action. By highlighting the atrocities and corruption committed by Islamic rulers, Muslims have expressed their displeasure. But the political revolution going on in Algeria, Tunisia, Yemen, Baharin  Syria, Kuwait, Iraq, Egypt, Afghanistan and Libya is not for reformation of Islam or revision of the unholy Koran. Koran, Hadith and Suna are the root cause of terrorism, corruption, hatred and turmoil.Islamic world is in turmoil and Muslims have a curious way of rebellion. We have witnessed  social and political revolution in Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. These so called revolution is only for political power grab. Muslims have installed more atrocious Islamic rulers after the political turmoil. We have seen Colonel Khadaffi in Libya, Idi Amin in Uganda, Aythollah Khomeni in Iran and terrorist Hammas in Lebanon. The revolution and power change was Islamic in outlook. The new regime continued Islamic brutality. In Egypt Muslim Brotherhood took advantage of the regime change and Coptic Christians were facing discrimination and murder. In Iran Ayotholla Khomeni murdered thousands  of Bhahis, sunis, and Ahamediayas. In pakistan  and Afghanistan. Islamic rulers murdered millions of Hindus, sikhs and other non Muslims. There was inadequacy of any Islamic reform rational thinking, or liberal economic reform.  political leadership was not of a caliber that would disprove the charges by non Muslims. The failure of political leaders in Islamic countries was too real and tended to validate our complains of Islam.Mullahs and Muslims brother hood increased their influence and atrocities against non Muslims continued and it will continue after Arab spring unless the civilized world compel Muslims for Islamic reform. Phony liberals, Marxists Misfits, pseudo secularits  and Media cohorts in Islamic payroll call it Arab Spring. I say Arab Spring is Islamic practice of Al-Taquiea.
