The new version of Alias apparently runs on the latest Macs. Haven't tried it yet, but my friends say it works great. I use Vectorworks for my 3D renderings these days...sure it's not really as intuitive as Alias or good with the organically-shaped stuff, but it's rare when you'll be doing that these days anyway.

My two cents. I love my Mac. I will only get a PC again if I absolutely have to run Solidworks.

hey industrial designers,

i'm finally going to make the switch from a pc to a  - gasp - mac. the
exhibit designers out here all seem to be using vectorworks, and since
i'm in the market for a new laptop, i think i'll buy one of those
little white blobs.

are any of you on a mac, and using 3D programs? i generally have
multiple design programs open, so it needs to have a pretty big amount
of power. what kind of mac are you using? are there things that you're
happy with, dissatisfied with, etc? anything that can help me in this
expensive endeavor?

cheers,
renata

Your doing the right thing. I just bought a $2500 Dell and I want to throw
it out a window.

Cheers and Good Luck,

going to the dark side! booooo

my only recommendation is to pony up the extra $ for the aluminum bodied
one.
from what i have read, they are comparable on the tech specs, but the new
plastic uni-body is really easy to crack.

ok, so my only OTHER recommendation is to buy extended coverage. this is
because on the new macs, the battery isn't user replaceable, so if you need
to get that swapped out in a year or so, you have to send it in.

what's wrong with the dell??? How urgent is the need for the new laptop?
Apple just announced their use of Intel Core i5 and i7 chips in their
iMacs.... and the i7's are slowly creeping into the laptop market, at least
on the PC side.

If you can wait long enough for the new chip to make it's way into the all
Apple products, I'd say it'd be worth it...
