i have been thinking about digital security, privacy and personal information
quite a bit the past few days, after reading about the high school in Pensilvania
that is being sued for remotly tapping the web cameras in its students laptops
(if you haven't heard of this, check out its wiki page @ : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blake_Robbins )
and the release of Google's new social communications tool BUZZ.

anyways, it reminded me of a little flash video i saw awhile back.
its definitely worth checking out.

not all of its predictions came true, but way more of them did then didn't.
but the best part about it is, it was made in 2004, when gmail was brand new, twitter was unimaginable,

thinking for the future is part of what design is about...
i remember watching this movie as a freshmen in collage and thinking, no way could it ever happen...
6 years latter it doesn't seem so far fetched.

i know its not really design related, but think back 3 or 4 years... compare that to were we are now as a culture.
now try and imagen 4 years in the future...

Most of the non-specific stuff in that really has happened, although obviously the battle between professional and amateur journalism is still going on (even if print has had serious losses against the web). The doomsday direction this guy takes the story is interesting, but I find that what's going on is actually a great deal more hopeful and positive than he seemed to imagine. The web has enabled a level of collective intelligence that we've never had before, participation is changing the way people view themselves and interact with their lives, amateur journalism is providing a force to keep the moneyed interests of media in check and all of this facilitates a kind of cooperation that could change the way we run society. I think it's great!

Thanks for sending this Michael - fascinating stuff. Anyone else have thoughts?
