JustFix.nyc is seeking a User Research contractor with 3+ years of relevant experience to join us on our mission to co-create tools with tenants, organizers, and legal advocates to fight displacement and achieve stable, healthy housing for all, leveraging the power of data and technology to support individual and collective action for housing justice. Working directly with our Executive Director, Deputy Director, and Lead Engineer, this role will focus on a project in the New York City neighborhoods of Inwood and Washington Heights. The project will involve creating and testing a new text message-based service that connects tenants with resources to take control of their housing problems.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research in the context of tenant interviews and focus groups in order to understand and meet the needs of tenant users;
- Conduct testing to ensure the service is usable and accessible;
- Work with the Deputy Director to build and improve our conversation textbot based on user research with tenant organizers, legal advocates, and other external partners located principally in Washington Heights and Inwood;
- Collaborate with our Lead Engineer to provide feedback on the product based on usability tests; support with implementing design changes; and
- Provide recommendations and insights to marketing and programmatic staff members in order to effectively distribute and promote the product to the target audience.
Must have
- 3+ years of relevant experience;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Fluency or professional proficiency in written and spoken Spanish;
- Strong writing skills, including experience with copy-editing;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills - we are a small team that works together closely;
Nice to have
- Rich experience with user research throughout the product life cycle, and an understanding of the role that research and user testing should play;
- Experience with textbots, chatbots or other forms of conversational design.
- Interest in civic technology;
- Previously used remote collaboration tools such as Slack and Google Suite;
- A passion for social justice and being a part of a larger movement fighting for safe, healthy, and affordable housing;
- Self-organization and ability to make, meet, and hold others accountable to deadlines;
- Detailand solutions-oriented;
- Resourceful and creative;
- Culturally competent with deep experience working across lines of cultural, racial, and linguistic difference.
- Experience building tools or new systems in a startup environment or non-profit. Personal or professional experience, drawing you to civic tech, social justice movements, or housing justice.
- Local to NYC, especially experience working in Northern Manhattan.

Compensation
$50-$60 per hour for 10-20 hours per week starting as soon as possible through late summer (Temporary, Contractor).
