Sibley Memorial Hospital – Washington, DC or Remote


Job Description Summary

Sibley Memorial Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, has an open position for a Social Innovation Design Intern to support the hospital’s Community Health Design + Innovation work. This internship is for those who are interested     in applying their design skills (visual, service, social, industrial, or product) to take on projects that work towards improving health and healthcare in underserved communities. As an intern, you will be part of an innovation team that is working to advance health equity and bring about new ways of improving community health and healthcare.  

 

The Intern will take on a diverse range of projects, including, supporting program operations for Ward Infinity, our social innovation accelerator. Some duties may include designing experiences to engage communities,     designing services for teams in our accelerator program, or    putting together executive level presentations to share our work with local and national audiences. The fellow will also have the opportunity to contribute to healthcare system and service design projects to develop recommendations for improving healthcare delivery in underserved communities. The Fellow may perform other duties as assigned.

 

This role is perfect of someone who has experience in applying human centered design, is visually oriented, and has a passion for developing novel solutions to address persistent health challenges.  You are a great fit if you are passionate about understanding people’s needs and conveying complex concepts in a visually simple manner. You should be open to learning and growing but also come with their own ideas and suggestions on how to present or organize information. You are collaborative and enjoy working on teams to get things done, but can also work independently. The Intern should be passionate about public health, supporting vulnerable communities, and be open to novel ways of addressing persistent health challenges. It would be ideal if you not only have an understanding of public health issues, but also have a passion for design thinking/human centered design problem solving methods. This job is best performed by someone who is has an open mindset, is a self-starter, and is eager to contribute and learn.

 

Responsibilities may include:

  • Designing experiences and unique ways to engage the community
  • Applying human-centered design to develop solutions to supporting our program participants and alumni
  • Preparing visually compelling program materials and communication documents
  • Interacting with stakeholders, tracking and supporting work with district-based community advocates and partners
  • Conducting research, collecting data related to communities, and preparing draft publications, presentations, and talking points
  • Providing support generally for the Director of the Community Health Design + Innovation


Requirements:

  • Passion for and deep commitment to health equity advocacy and health design
  • Strong human-centered design and visual design skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience applying human-centered design to health or other social issues
  • Skilled at organizing and paying attention to details
  • Ability to prioritize work under tight deadlines while remaining flexible
  • Professionalism and excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work individually, as well as part of a team
  • Strong knowledge and applications of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including (but not limited to) Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Candidates must be current undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing studying visual design, service design, industrial design, product design, transdisciplinary design, social design or some other design related field
  • We welcome students who have an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving

 

Interns normally work 20-40 hours per week, and must commit to working through the end of August 2021. Position is based in Washington, D.C. or remote.
