Vital Village Networks is a community-based network of residents and agencies committed to maximizing child, family, and community wellbeing and based in Boston Medical Center.  VVN facilitates a Community Food Systems Fellowship, a leadership pipeline to increase opportunities for diverse leaders who are committed to food justice and equity to build skills, capacity, and networks.

We are seeking a graphic designer to support the design and layout of a fellow-led zine project.

  • Project Description: The Food Sovereignty Zine is a resource developed by 2023 fellows that offers a community-rooted framework, resources, tools, and spotlights of how local communities are mobilizing for food sovereignty. We envision the final product to be in a zine format that is accessible, visually compelling, and engaging to readers.

  • Requested Services - Scope of Work:

  • 1) Develop zine layout template and design on Canva: Building on example designs provided by the team, develop 2-3 initial design options to select a final zine template. VVN will provide conceptual design notes, organization brand assets, and example designs.

  • 2) Complete layout with final content on Canva template: Transfer zine content (text and graphics available on a Google Word Document) onto selected Canva zine template for draft #1. Ensure design matches VVN’s style guide and publication structure and layout guidance.

  • 3) Incorporate 1-2 rounds of design edits for overall design refinement and preparation for final publication: Incorporate team feedback on Canva drafts until finalized and approved by the team.  Overall clean-up to ensure all graphic and design elements are aligned and consistent.

  • Criteria: We are seeking to work with a partner with the following qualifications:

    • Highly skilled and experienced in zine publication layout/design using Canva

    • Clean, high quality, and detailed design style

    • Ability to meet a fast turnaround time

    • Strong communications, given the fast timeline

We anticipate at least 1 brief call for project onboarding and to review scope of work and required edits, with regular email communications for back and forth feedback and design edits.

  • Budget: Please include in your inquiry your proposed budget for the outlined scope of work, including design, layout, 1-2 rounds of revisions, and final materials.
