Background:
Launched in 2018, Vital Village Networks of Opportunity for Child Wellbeing’s "In the Arena with NOW" podcast (https://www.networksofopportunity.org/podcast) aims to lift up the voices of community leaders who are “in the arena.” From classrooms, playgrounds, Congressional halls, hospitals, and neighborhood streets, the series features local leaders from across the network who are working to make sure that all children and families can live healthy, thriving lives. Each episode delves into the experiences of local coalitions, residents, and experts and the best practices and strategies they are using to create equitable systems of care that can support healing, joy, and equity towards the wellbeing of children and their families.
Objectives:
With 32 episodes published across three seasons, we seek to partner with an experienced communications strategist and podcast storytelling consultant who specializes in this unique medium to assist us in Phase 1 of a strategic design and planning process. We are seeking a partner that brings in-depth understanding and strategy expertise of the nonprofit/social change landscape for podcast and multimedia storytelling projects. As a result of this engagement, we aim to be able to:
Refresh and relaunch the next podcast season in 2026 as part of a broader storytelling strategy
Strengthen podcast communications strategy and engagement across core audiences
Identify opportunities to strengthen internal team structure, workflow operations and resource management.
Develop a proposed work plan for relaunching our podcast program in connection with organization’s strategic plan and storytelling goal
Summary of Consultant Role:
Review existing podcast workflow, engagement, and performance data
Conduct background research and cost benefit analysis to outline potential redesign and implementation options, and prepare materials to present for team feedback and review
Design and facilitate at least two meetings with VVN team: a) Initial launch meeting to review project goals, processes, and deliverables, and b) after conducting assessment and research meet with the team to summarize findings, outline design and implementation options and offer recommendations to support team decision making around implementation
Scope of Work and Deliverables:
The selected partner will work closely with and facilitate a process with VVN staff focused on the following two areas:
A) Podcast Design and Storytelling Strategy
Facilitate initial strategic design and planning conversation to identify short- and long-term goals, including refreshed branding (e.g. potential title change)
Outline options, best practices and recommendations for interview/conversational style podcast storytelling, including examples of effective and peer podcast programs in similar fields or organizational types (e.g. leadership development), background research on effective strategies, and factors shaped by resource constraints
Share best practices for conversational style podcast programming and design, including interviewing strategies, tools, and resources
B) Production Workflow and Operations
Review and analyze current production workflows and team roles/ structure to identify areas of improvement and greater efficiency, including conducting cost benefit analysis
Identify options for podcast host structures, including examples and considerations
Identify processes and tools that can help the team prioritize strategies based on internal capacity and resource constraints
Key deliverables:
Develop design and implementation options for a refreshed podcast design and updated communications and engagement strategy that responds to the current landscape of nonprofit/community-based initiative storytelling and communications
Offer options for updated operational / team structure and production workflows, based on resource and capacity factors
Timeline:
We anticipate this project to be completed in 3-4 weeks in September 2025, including an initial project launch call, and 1-2 additional meetings to review proposed recommendations and options for podcast design and implementation.
