This post is located in the Design and Production Unit of the Printing Section, Production and Support Service, Division of Conference Management, United Nations Office at Geneva.
ResponsibilitiesUnder the general supervision of the Chief, Design and Production Unit, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Graphic Arts Sub-Unit, the incumbent will:
- Design print and electronic products for publications, conferences and public information campaigns (e.g. logos, brand identities, books, posters, booklets, brochures, banners, e-publications, web and social media graphics etc..), in the six official languages of the Organization, using currently available IT hardware (PCs, printers, scanners) and professional Windows-based software such as Indesign CC, Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, Acrobat CC, Edge, Muse, HTML, CSS and Adobe DPS.
- Analyse the technical specifications given in the job folder or in explicit oral instructions from the supervisor or client, and, in addition to aesthetic considerations, convey the client's message in an appropriate manner.
- Apply graphic arts communication and production methods as required by the assignment, displaying excellent knowledge of production processes.
- Convert and import, using computer applications, all elements (text, images and tables) in electronic or other formats (EPS, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, Word, Excel, Acrobat) that need to be incorporated in the layout.
- Use information provided by the client, create infographics and pictograms to help communicate complex information in a simple manner.
- Find photographs and illustrations, in the image library or online, that will help to formulate and communicate the client's objectives.
- Ensure proper colour management when handling text or logos and when calibrating standard or digitized images, taking due account of the medium (paper, interactive PDF or ePub), the printing method (offset or digital) and the paper (matt or coated) to be used.
- Provide the client with a visually pleasing model/proof.
- Plan and organize the work, oversee execution of the plans and modify them if necessary.
- Work independently and at times under pressure.
Secondary studies or equivalent. Specialized training in Graphic Arts supplemented by a diploma or certificate is desirable.
Work ExperienceAt least five years of experience in the area of graphic design (brand identities, print publications), of which preferably one year in the United Nations. Experience in the production of digital publications is required. Experience in multi-media communications is desirable.
LanguagesFluency in French or English and knowledge of the other language is required. Knowledge of another United Nations language is an asset.
AssessmentEvaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
