Patti,
I noticed in your copper complete that you have 40000iu vitamin A. I
currently give a 25000iu gel cap beta carotene. Should I have the A
put in my mix instead ?

It's 15,000 IU (not 40,000) - minimum "insurance".  Theoretically, there should be enough in the forage until it gets old plus some excess vitamin A is stored in the liver, so the 15,000 IU should cover most. It is better to make up extra needed with beta carotene, from gel caps - or carrots for horses who aren't IR.

Oops, sorry on the misquote on dosage. All of my hay is at least a year old now but stored covered and in my barn.  So, is 25000 iu beta carotene sufficient, I think it is the smallest dosage I could find in a gel cap. So, what I am  understanding is that gel caps are okay for IR horses ?

And on a lysine note. If hay has sufficient protein is lysine necessary if DE is good ? If so, do you still supplement w/ methionine and threonine ? I recall studies on IR mares and it worsened IR. I tried to find an amino acid profile for Bermuda hay and can not. Are you aware of any studies/analysis ?

Sorry so many questions. I know you are busy, but you are a guru ! I really appreciate your time and all the others on this site !

And back on the nitrate trail, Donna, I would sure keep in mind the grower you got that hay from and buy from them again. It is obvious w/ the protein and nitrate levels they don’t over fertilize ! Especially if you can’t test before you buy it.
