Iodine for a 1,000 lb horse: 3 to 5 mg
No need for higher dose for IR horses
Source - 1/2 scoop (see below) is enough
- or -
Iodized salt - need 2 to 3 ounces (8 to 12 teaspoons/3 to 4
tablespoons)
Smaller horses - 2 to 3 mg iodine
Source - fill scoop 1/2 to 2/3 from top
- or -
Iodized salt - 1.5 to 2 ounces (6 to 8 teaspoons/2 to 3 tablespoons)
1/2 scoop of source (remembering it is a "tapered" scoop so you're
really filling it to about 1/3 from the top) is sufficient. For a big
horse (like TJ) I recommend 1 level to one heaping scoop.
Even though the max level for iodine is much higher and the Source
label says to use a heaping scoop, that much isn't necessary.
Source label - iodine is 600 ppm = 0.6 mg/gram (this is a minimum per
website, could be up to 900)
Heaping scoop = 1/2 teaspoon = 14 grams
So, one heaping scoop = approx 8-9 mg, 1/2 scoop is 4-4.5 mg.
NRC for a 1000 lb horse is 3 (maintenance) to 3.5 (work) mg of iodine/
day.
I've tended to go with a little higher level - 2.5 mg per 500 lbs body
weight, or around 4-5mg for a 1000 lb horse.
If you've got a horse who will chow down iodized salt mixed in their
feed at the levels needed, this is the cheapest way to provide iodine.
Most folks won't get their horses taking in that much salt, so I've
found Source to be the best way to make sure they're getting their
iodine.
Kelp won't do it - levels are not guaranteed/controlled.
Make sure people aren't also keeping colored "mineral" blocks hanging
around.
